A JetBlue flight traveling from New York to San Diego made an emergency landing on Saturday evening (local time) after the pilots were alerted about a smoke or fire in the cargo, Kake.com reported.
The aircraft rapidly descended from 36,000 feet to just 4,250 feet in under ten minutes while making a safe emergency landing at Salina Regional Airport.
Calling it an “absolute plummet”, a passenger wrote on Reddit, “Pilot came to talk to us maybe 90 minutes after we landed and said they don’t know if there was any fire or smoke, but since the suppression system was deployed, that plane has to go to Boston to get checked out and can’t carry passengers. They left with the crew.”
“They got us safely to the ground in the literal middle of nowhere KS. Tiny airport. Emergency exit on the tarmac. The airport is so small, they actually got the local school bus drivers to come and bring us from the tarmac to the terminal,” they added.
“Pilot said a sensor was showing smoke In the cargo bay. Passenger said they thought they heard a loud bang. That was a fast drop… No fire found once on the ground. Now just the logistics of a stranded flight and need for a new plane,” another passenger said.
No casualties have been reported so far.

Indian pacers are on the level with Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar and Waqar Younis: Former Pakistan cricketer

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has heaped praise on India’s bowling attack after their comprehensive 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Chennai. India’s pacers, led by Jasprit Bumrah (4/50), Mohammed Siraj (2/30), and Akash Deep (2/19), outclassed Bangladesh’s batting lineup, dismissing them for a meager 149 in the first innings.
Bumrah’s four-wicket haul and Akash Deep’s early breakthroughs, combined with Siraj’s consistency, left Bangladesh reeling. The dominant performance has drawn comparisons from Basit, who likened India’s current pace attack to Pakistan’s legendary fast-bowling trio of Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Waqar Younis.
“The Indian bowling unit is so impactful that they are on the level with pacers Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Waqar Younis. Right now, Mohammed Shami is not even playing,” Basit remarked on his YouTube channel.Basit also expressed excitement about India’s emerging pace talent, particularly 22-year-old Mayank Yadav. The young speedster impressed during the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), clocking the fastest delivery of the season at 156.7 kph for Lucknow Super Giants. Basit believes Mayank’s pace could be a game-changer in India’s upcoming Test assignments, specifically against Australia.

“Mayank Yadav’s ball is very dangerous. His bouncer is accurate. I wish to see him play a Test match in Australia,” Basit said.
With India’s established pacers performing brilliantly, all eyes will be on how the selectors integrate budding talents like Mayank Yadav into the squad for future challenges.

Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and National People’s Power (NPP coalition), was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s president on Monday morning, after a decisive victory in the country’s presidential elections.
The election results announced a day earlier, signaled a rejection of the nation’s traditional political elite, widely blamed for driving Sri Lanka into its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from British rule in 1948.
Dissanayake, 56, took the oath of office at the presidential secretariat, administered by chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
He defeated his main rival, Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), in Saturday’s vote. Outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who came into office during the 2022 economic collapse and implemented strict austerity measures under an IMF bailout, finished a distant third with just 17.27% of the vote.
As part of the transition of power, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned shortly before Dissanayake was sworn in. Gunawardena, 75, had served as prime minister since July 2022.

Watching, downloading child pornography are offences under POCSO Act: SC | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday overturned a Madras high court order that stated merely downloading and viewing child pornography did not constitute an offense under the POCSO Act and IT law.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra ruled that both downloading and watching child pornography are punishable offenses under the POCSO Act and the IT law.The bench also provided guidelines regarding child pornography and its legal implications.
“We have said about lingering impact of child pornography on victimisation and abuse of children and on role to report an offence, including role of society and stakeholders,” the bench said.
“We have suggested to Parliament to bring an amendment to POCSO… so that definition of child pornography can be referred to as ‘child sexually abusive and exploitative material’. We have suggested an Ordinance can be brought in,” it said.
The apex court’s decision came in response to a petition challenging the Madras high court’s ruling. The Supreme Court had previously consented to hear the plea, which argued that the high court’s decision contradicted existing laws on the matter. Senior advocate H S Phoolka, representing two petitioner organizations, highlighted this discrepancy to the court.
Deeming the Madras high court’s decision to quash the criminal proceedings an “egregious error,” the Supreme Court overturned it and reinstated the criminal prosecution. Additionally, the SC called upon Parliament to replace the term “child pornography” with “child sexual exploitative and abuse material (CSEAM)” through an ordinance.
As Justice Pardiwala said he was beholden to CJI for giving him opportunity to write the judgment, CJI Chandrachud said it is a landmark judgment and the first instance in world where law on child sexual exploitative and abuse material is dealt in such detail by judiciary.
The Madras high court had previously quashed a criminal case against a 28-year-old man charged with downloading and viewing child pornography on his mobile phone. The high court had granted relief, stating that to constitute an offense under Section 67-B of the IT Act, 2000, the accused must have published, transmitted, or created material depicting children in a sexually explicit act or conduct.
The high court had also noted that children nowadays face the serious issue of watching pornography and that society should focus on educating them rather than punishing them.

Congress, other casteist parties only remember Dalits during their bad days: Mayawati | India News

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the upcoming Haryana assembly elections, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Monday urged Dalit leaders to break ties with Congress and other “casteist parties” and follow the path of Dr BR Ambedkar.
Her remarks come as the BSP and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) alliance seeks to position itself as a pro-Dalit alternative in the state.
In a series of posts on X, Mayawati accused the Congress and other parties of exploiting Dalit leaders during crises, only to sideline them later.
“The Congress and other casteist parties only remember Dalits during their bad days and temporarily appoint them to key positions,” she said. Mayawati pointed to the current political scenario in Haryana as an example of this marginalisation.
“But in their good days, these parties mostly sideline Dalits and replace them with casteist individuals, as is currently being witnessed in Haryana,” she added.

She called on Dalit leaders to take inspiration from Ambedkar and detach themselves from these parties, stressing that they should work to distance their communities from political groups that do not prioritise Dalit interests.
“These humiliated Dalit leaders should be inspired by their messiah, Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, and detach themselves from these parties. They should also work to keep their communities away from these parties,” BSP chief added in her tweets.

Drawing a parallel with Ambedkar’s resignation, Mayawati also recalled her own resignation from the Rajya Sabha in 2017 over the violence against Dalits in Saharanpur.

“Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar resigned from the post of Union law minister for the sake of self-respect and dignity of the weaker sections. Inspired by him, I also resigned from the Rajya Sabha when I wasn’t allowed to speak on the atrocities against Dalits in Saharanpur. Hence, I advise Dalits to follow in his footsteps,” she said.

Mayawati also targeted the grand old party for being “historically opposed” to reservations for Dalits and backward communities. She accused Rahul Gandhi of expressing anti-reservation views abroad, warning people to be cautious of “anti-Constitution, anti-reservation, and anti-SC, ST, OBC parties.”

Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump: Closest presidential race of century in US’s history

Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump: Closest presidential race of century in US's history
Americans are set to witness one of the closest presidential race of the century between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris with the recent surveys showing results falling within the margin of error, particularly when considering the electoral college dynamics, CNN reported.
When looking at all national surveys conducted since the recent debate—including those from ABC News/Ipsos, Fox News, and The New York Times/Siena College—the average, according to the latest CNN Poll of Polls, shows Harris ahead by just 3 points. This narrow margin highlights the competitive nature of the upcoming election.
Meanwhile, polling data released on Sunday by CBS News and NBC News indicates that vice president Kamala Harris holds leads of 4 and 5 points, respectively.
Since 1960, every presidential election year has featured at least three weeks where one candidate led by 5 points or more.
Currently, a 3-point lead in the national polls offers little assurance for Harris. Historically, since 1948, the average discrepancy between polls just before the election and the actual Election Day results has been 3 points. In some instances, such as in 2020, this margin of error has been even greater.
Neither candidate has been able to secure a lead of 5 points or more in national polling, even during the period when President Joe Biden was the likely and later presumptive Democratic nominee.
The lack of a clear lead of at least 5 points this election cycle is significant, as it is quite rare in close races for candidates not to gain a substantial advantage at some point.

Delhi Waqf Board case: Court extends AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s judicial custody till October 7 | Delhi News

Delhi Waqf Board case: Court extends AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan's judicial custody till October 7

NEW DELHI: A court in Delhi on Monday extended AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s judicial custody till October 7 in connection with a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in appointments made at the Delhi Waqf Board during his tenure as its chairperson.
The Rouse Avenue Court, however, allowed Khan to carry his medical record in judicial custody.

The court also called for a report from jail authorities on Khan’s application seeking permission to carry an electric kettle and a glucose monitoring device in jail.
The court has set September 25 as the next date of hearing.
The money laundering probe against Khan stems from two FIRs, one registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Delhi Wakf Board-related “irregularities” and another by the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch related to a case of alleged possession of disproportionate assets.
Khan is among several AAP leaders who have been arrested by the federal agency in different money laundering cases, including chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and former minister Satyendar Jain.
Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are now out of jail on bail.
The ED has claimed Khan acquired “huge proceeds of crime” in cash through illegal recruitment of staff in the Delhi Wakf Board and invested those to purchase immovable assets in the name of his associates.
The agency had alleged in a statement that “illegal recruitment” of staff took place in the Wakf Board and “illegal personal gains” were made by unfairly leasing the Wakf Board properties during Khan’s chairmanship (2018-2022).
The agency filed a charge sheet in this case in January and named four people including three alleged associates of Khan — Zeeshan Haider, Daud Nasir and Jawed Imam Siddiqui.

NASA alert! Two asteroids, aeroplane and bus-sized to pass Earth tomorrow; should you be concerned? |

According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, two large asteroids, each about the size of an aeroplane, are set to pass by Earth on September 24, 2024. While these asteroids will come close to our planet, they pose no danger. The asteroids—2020 GE and 2024 RO11—are expected to offer an exciting opportunity for astronomers to observe.
Asteroid 2020 GE, the smaller of the two, has a diameter of approximately 26 feet, comparable to a bus.It will pass Earth just beyond the Moon’s orbit, but scientists assure that it will pass safely.
Meanwhile, the recently discovered asteroid 2024 RO11, much larger at 120 feet in diameter, will fly by at a distance of 4,850,000 miles. Although it won’t be visible without a telescope, astronomers equipped with advanced tools should be able to track its path. On September 25, another asteroid, 2024 RK7, measuring 100 feet across, will also safely pass by Earth, smaller than 2024 RO11 but still no cause for concern.

Asteroid 2020 GE and 2024 RO11 will pass Earth

Asteroid 2020 GE, the smaller object, is around 26 feet in diameter, about the size of a bus. It will pass Earth at a distance of 410,000 miles, slightly beyond the Moon’s orbit. Though relatively close, 2020 GE is no threat and will offer a great viewing opportunity for those with specialised telescopes.
On the same day, asteroid 2024 RO11, with a diameter of 120 feet (about the size of an aeroplane), will pass Earth safely at a distance of 4,580,000 miles. This recently discovered asteroid won’t be visible to the naked eye but may be spotted using advanced telescopes.
On September 25, asteroid 2024 RK7, which is 100 feet in diameter, will pass by Earth at a safe distance. Though smaller than 2024 RO11, it also poses no risk to Earth.

Should you be worried?

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory assures that the asteroids will glide smoothly and safely past Earth. Despite their close proximity, they pose no threat. There is no risk of collision between the two asteroids, which will pass by Earth one after the other.

What are asteroids?

Asteroids are rocky, airless remnants from the formation of the solar system around 4.6 billion years ago. Known as “minor planets,” these objects vary in size from small rocks to hundreds of miles in diameter. Most asteroids are found in the asteroid belt, a region between Mars and Jupiter where millions of them orbit the Sun.
Despite being smaller than planets, asteroids can pose a significant threat if they collide with Earth, which is why scientists monitor their movements closely. These space rocks hold valuable clues about the early solar system and are the focus of ongoing space missions.

NEW DELHI: During India’s opening Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, making a comeback after almost two years, added some humor to the game.
On Day 3 of the second innings, Pant was heard on the stump mic advising the Bangladesh team on field placements. He was heard as saying, “O bhai, idhar aayega yeh fielder (please bring the fielder here),” entertaining the commentary team and fans alike.
After India’s 280-run win, Pant spoke about the moment in a video shared by the BCCI on X.”I think the understanding of the game for me is that cricket should improve wherever you play. So I was just trying to help the team that you can set a fielder here, and it was amazing. Actually, I enjoyed it,” Pant said.
WATCH:

Pant returned to Test cricket after recovering from an accident in December 2022. In the second innings, he scored 109 runs, showing a mix of aggressive and controlled batting. He expressed feeling nervous but determined.
“I was jittery, but there was a fire inside me to make it happen. And eventually, I did it. I’m happy, but not thinking about it too much,” he said.

Pant and Shubman Gill formed a 167-run partnership, putting the Bangladesh bowlers under pressure. Pant highlighted their off-field relationship helping on the field.
“When you have a great relationship off the field, it helps on the field. We were having fun, talking about the game, and staying relaxed while focusing on stitching a great partnership,” he said.
India now lead the series 1-0 as they head to Kanpur for the second and final Test starting on Friday.
