‘A Thakur has been encountered’: Akhilesh Yadav’s wish fulfilled, says father of Sultanpur robbery accused | Lucknow News

'A Thakur has been encountered': Akhilesh Yadav's wish fulfilled, says father of Sultanpur robbery accused

AMETHI: “Akhilesh Yadav’s wish has been fulfilled, a Thakur has been encountered,” said the father of the second Sultanpur jewellery store robbery case accused who was gunned down in an encounter. Expressing his anger and grief, Dharm Raj Singh alleged political motives behind his son Anuj Pratap Singh’s death. “My son has become a victim of politics. He only had one or two cases against him, yet he was encountered.”
Anuj Pratap Singh, a resident of Amethi district’s Janapur village and an accused in the August 28 jewellery store robbery in Sultanpur, was shot dead in a pre-dawn encounter by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police in Unnao district, officials reported.
Dharm Raj Singh, Anuj’s father, informed that he discovered his son’s death through the media and had not received any official notification.
He further criticized the “selective enforcement” by law authorities.
“There are people with 30 cases against them, yet they remain untouched, but someone with only one or two cases is being encountered. This government can do anything,” he alleged.
He also mentioned that his son had visited their home on May 3 and departed on June 4.
Mangesh Yadav, another accused in the robbery, was shot dead by the STF on September 5, leading to a political controversy. The Samajwadi Party and the Congress labeled the encounter as “fake”.
Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party president, claimed that such encounters were motivated by the accused’s “caste” and referred to the STF as “Special Thakur Force” and “Sar-e-aam Thoko Force”. The ruling BJP, however, dismissed Yadav’s remarks as stemming from “frustration”, while the police refuted his allegations.
In a post on X after the September 5 encounter, Yadav said, “It seems that the people involved in the Sultanpur robbery had deep ties with the ruling party. That is why before the fake encounter, the main accused was contacted and made to surrender and other accused were shot in the legs only for show, and one of them was killed on the basis of their ‘caste’.”
“When the main accused surrendered, all the looted goods should also be returned and the government should pay compensation separately,” he had said.
Fake encounters turn the protector into a predator, he had claimed.
“The solution is not fake encounters but real law and order,” Yadav further said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had alleged in a post on X on September 7, “In the states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ‘law and the Constitution’ are being violated by those who have the responsibility to enforce them. The death of Mangesh Yadav in an encounter in Sultanpur has once again proved that the BJP does not believe in the rule of law.”
Ajay Rai, the state unit chief of Congress, visited Mangesh Yadav’s residence and called for a high court judge to investigate the matter.

Spicejet: Spicejet faces another insolvency plea from operational creditor; NCLT issues notice

NEW DELHI: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Monday issued notice to debt-ridden air carrier SpiceJet over the plea filed by one of its operational creditors. A two-member NCLT bench, comprising Mahendra Khandelwal and Sanjeev Tanjan, has directed Spicejet to file a reply and list the matter for the next hearing on November 14.
SpiceJet is already facing several insolvency petitions from creditors, including Willis Lease, Aircastle Ireland Ltd, Wilmington and Celestial Aviation at NCLT and the appellate tribunal NCLAT.
The latest petition is by Techjockey Infotech Pvt Ltd, an operational creditor, filed under section 9 of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code, through Karanjawala & Co.
Techjockey Infotech claimed a default of nearly Rs 1.2 crore owed by SpiceJet against software services availed by them and requested to initiate a corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) against the air carrier.
It contended that its debt has been acknowledged by SpiceJet, though it has not been yet complied.
Earlier in June, NCLT had issued notice to SpiceJet over the petition filed by Engine Lease Finance (ELF). Based in Ireland, ELF is the world’s leading independent engine financing and leasing company and claimed a payment default of over USD 12 million (around Rs 100 crore).
The NCLT rejected the pleas of Willis Lease Finance and Wilmington Trust. Spicejet settled the case with Celestial Aviation.
The petitions filed by Aircastle and Alterna Aircraft are pending before the insolvency tribunal.
Both Wilmington Trust and Willis Lease Finance have moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) challenging the dismissal of their insolvency plea by NCLT.
SpiceJet has raised Rs 3,000 crore through the sale of shares to qualified institutional buyers, which will provide a much-needed tailwind for the struggling airline.
Among others, the proceeds will be used for settling liabilities of creditors, including aircraft and engine lessors, engineering vendors and financiers.
Five allottees each have received more than five per cent of the shares offered in the QIP. They are Authum Investment and Infrastructure Ltd (9.33 per cent), Discovery Global Opportunity (Mauritius) Ltd (8.33 per cent), Troo Capital (6.67 per cent), Societe Generale – ODI (6.04 per cent) and Goldman Sachs (Singapore) Pte – ODI (5.33 per cent), as per another regulatory filing
The carrier’s statutory dues totalled Rs 601.5 crore as of September 15 and net proceeds from the placement will also be utilised towards clearing the dues.

EY employee death: Backlash mounts as Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks on stress management spark outrage | India News

NEW DELHI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is facing sharp criticism from opposition parties following her comments on stress management, made in reference to the tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young CA. Sitharaman suggested that colleges and universities should teach students to manage stress through spirituality and inner strength—remarks that opposition leaders have condemned as “outright cruel.”
Perayil, who passed her CA exams in 2023 and had been working at EY’s Pune office for just four months, died in July.In a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, her mother, Anita Augustine, described the “backbreaking” workload her daughter endured, which affected her “physically, emotionally, and mentally.”
During an event at a private medical college, Sitharaman referenced the 26-year-old’s death without naming her or the company involved, saying: “A company, without mentioning its name… A woman who had studied CA well, unable to cope with the work pressure… she died unable to cope with the pressure.”
The finance minister went on to say that students should not only receive education but also be taught stress management through spirituality and inner strength. “Believe in God, we need to have God’s grace. Seek God, learn good discipline. Your Atma shakti (inner strength) will grow only from this,” she said, adding that educational institutions should bring in divinity to help students “handle pressure.”
These comments sparked immediate backlash. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticizing Sitharaman for “victim-shaming” and ignoring the real issue said, “Dear Nirmala Sitaraman ji, Anna had (the) inner strength to handle the stress that came with pursuing a gruelling Chartered Accountancy degree. It was the toxic work culture, long work hours that took away her life which needs to be addressed. Stop victim-shaming and at least try to be a little sensitive, am sure God will be the guide if you seek.”

CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar echoed these sentiments, calling the finance minister’s remarks “bizarre and insensitive.” He argued that the focus should be on addressing the “inhuman working conditions” faced by young employees rather than advising them to rely on God. “Overwork, inhuman working conditions, pervasive unemployment, and lack of social security are creating stress and insecurity among workers… Instead of addressing these structural concerns, the Finance Minister’s advice to ‘rely on God’ is bizarre and insensitive,” he said.
Congress leader K C Venugopal also condemned the remarks, saying, “The ruling regime and the Finance Minister can only see the pain of corporate giants like Adani and Ambani, not the pain of the hardworking and toiling young generation… It is downright cruel on part of the Finance Minister to blame Anna and her family for suggesting that she should have learnt stress management at home.”

He added, “The toxic work environment should have triggered an honest review of corporate practices and led to necessary reforms that protect employees.”
Amid the growing outrage, the government has promised to investigate EY’s work environment, though critics continue to press for structural changes that would protect young professionals from being overworked.

Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet discusses the cancelled spin-off from the series | English Movie News

Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cam Tucker on *Modern Family*, got talking recently regarding a scrapped spinoff he did with his character and Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Mitch Pritchett, which he believes would have worked. The 53-year-old was having an interview on *In Depth with Graham Bensinger* when he opened up about the disappointment that he and Jesse had when the network ended the project.

According to Eric, co-creator of the show, along with Chris Lloyd and a couple of writers, they already had an excellent script for the spinoff. The idea was supposed to revolve around the life of Cam and Mitch after transferring to Missouri, but the network would not take it. “They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it,'” Eric said. It was a let-down because they felt that the spinoff had great potential.

An actor admitted the sting of it was a little painful but guessed the network may have regarded them as “the old guys” and didn’t feel like lugging those characters any further. Still, Eric expressed his confidence that the spin-off would have worked out. “I don’t think it would have failed,” he declared, praising the commitment the creators of *Modern Family* gave the original show to make it such a success for so many years.

Although the spinoff did not come to be, Eric gave some hope with something exciting to expect from the cast in the future. He hinted at wanting a *Modern Family* Christmas special, noting that there has been talk of bringing back the cast for a holiday episode. “I wish we’d do a Christmas special, and there’s been talk of that,” he teased.

Earlier this year, the adult cast of Modern Family reunited for an adorable mini-session on the red carpet at the 2024 SAG Awards, delighting fans of the long-running sitcom. Related to this news is the interview of Nolan Gould, who played Luke Dunphy, about how being on the show dramatically changed the life of a child actor.

Although the Cam and Mitch spinoff may never make the cut, rumors of a reunion special from Eric could give fans of a favorite show the hope of seeing beloved series casts reunited once again for their next project.

Tamil Nadu to develop city’s own ‘Central Park’ on 118 of 160 acres of MRC land | Chennai News

Tamil Nadu to develop city's own 'Central Park' on 118 of 160 acres of MRC land

CHENNAI: In line with what Chennaiites were hoping for, a sprawling park and horticultural garden will come up on 118 of the 160 acres the govt recently took back from the Madras Race Club.
It will be modelled on New York’s Central Park, and will have walking and cycling paths, spaces for people to exercise and also just sit amid nature, and lots of flowers. The govt has issued a GO setting aside the 118 acres at Guindy/Velachery, conservatively valued at 4,832 crore, for the purpose.

Central Park

“It is also important to create these green areas for the health and recreation of the people of Chennai. These parks have to be created in places where they do not exist. Creating a big park in Chennai will ensure the sustainability of the environment. Parks play an important role in physical and mental health welfare of the people,” the govt said in a note on Sunday.
Activists laud state govt move
The land parcel forms part of the 160.86 acres in Venkatapuram, Adyar and Velachery that had been given on a 99-year lease to the Race Club on April 1, 1946, for a paltry rent of 614.13 a year. The lease given by the British had no provision for rent revision. The state govt cancelled the lease on Sept 9 saying the land was required for public use.
This is the third and biggest park to be developed by the present govt. Work is underway on the other two – the Kalaignar Centenary Park on R K Salai and a park in Ooty, both on govt land retrieved from private parties.
Environmentalists have welcomed the move to turn the Madras Race Club land into a green space. G Sundarrajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal said, “Chennai is already the hottest mega city of the country since our green cover is very low. A horticultural space will definitely help reduce the heat island effect.” The space should be developed with native trees and maintained well, he added.
As per the 2011 census, Chennai had a population of 86.9 lakh and the per capita green cover was 1.03 square metres.

Teenager stabbed to death on eve of UK ‘gang’ knives ban

Teenager stabbed to death on eve of UK 'gang' knives ban
A teenage boy has died after being stabbed in southeast London, police in the British capital said Monday, before a nationwide ban on “zombie” style weapons to reduce knife crime.
The Metropolitan Police said the boy was found injured after officers were called to a disturbance on a residential street in Woolwich at about 1735 GMT Sunday.
He died a short time later, a statement read.
No further details were released but the youth’s death comes with mounting concern about the numbers of offences involving knives and young people carrying them.
A total of 50,510 offences involving knives were recorded by police in England and Wales in the 12 months to March — up four percent on the previous year.
Of all recorded homicides in the same period, 43 percent involved a knife or a sharp instrument — a two-percent increase on the previous 12 months, statistics showed.
It will be against the law to own “zombie” type knives and machetes from Tuesday, and an amnesty and compensation is in place to hand over the weapons.
The ban involves knives with a blade more than eight inches (20 centimetres) long and those with a serrated cutting edge, which are often used by gangs.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this month launched an initiative to stop young people getting involved in knife crime, which he called a “national crisis”.
He has enlisted the support of actor Idris Elba, who is pushing for government intervention to reverse drastic funding cuts to youth services as a way to end violence.
