The defence, in its application, said the 17-year-old boy had sought admission in BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) course in the Delhi-based institute

A lawyer representing the underage accused in Pune’s Porsche car crash case on Thursday filed an application in the Juvenile Justice Board, saying he was unable to get admission in a Delhi management institute as it was insisting on a no objection certificate from the JJB.

However, the defence lawyer later withdrew the plea.

The defence, in its application, said the 17-year-old boy, who was allegedly driving the Porsche car when it crashed into two motorbike-borne IT engineers in May, had sought admission in BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) course in the Delhi-based institute.

Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray said the defence moved an application before the JJB, stating the CCL (Child in Conflict with Law) was unable to secure admission in the Delhi institute as it was insisting on an NOC from the board in view of the case pending against him.

”I responded that education was everyone’s right guaranteed by the Constitution and he (minor accused) must get admission,” he said.

The institute had given admission to the teenager, whose father is a prominent Pune-based builder, but later cancelled it and sought an NOC from the JJB, which is hearing his case.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ganesh Ingale, the investigating officer in the case, said the defence sought necessary directions from the JJB over the admission issue, but later withdrew the application.

”The defence stated that they no longer want to pursue admission in the Delhi-based institute and (the teenager) now wants to take admission in a Pune college,” he said.

The teen driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when his high-end car knocked down the two motorbike-borne IT professionals, one of them a woman, in the upscale Kalyani Nagar locality in the wee hours of May 19, killing both of them.

In June, the police had submitted their final report to the JJB detailing all evidence against the 17-year-old boy in the car crash case.

In July, the police filed a chargesheet against seven accused in a case linked to the accident, including the parents of the minor boy, in a Pune court.

The boy’s parents and two Sassoon General Hospital doctors and a staffer at the Maharashtra government-run medical facility were accused of swapping the blood samples of the minor with those of his mother after the crash.

Two other accused acted as middlemen between the father and the doctors to facilitate financial transactions to swap the blood samples, according to the chargesheet.

Chennai court acquits customs officer in diamond misappropriation case

Chennai court acquits customs officer in diamond misappropriation case

CHENNAI: The additional special court for CBI cases in Chennai on Thursday acquitted a customs officer and his accomplice in a Rs 2.24crore diamond misappropriation case. The judgment, delivered by principal special judge T Malarvalantina, pointed to significant gaps in customs warehouse protocols.
K S Kuppan, who was a preventive officer and custodian of valuables (COV) at the Customs House in Chennai from 2003 to 2004, was responsible for safeguarding valuables like diamonds seized from a Sri Lankan passenger at Anna International Airport here in 1996.These diamonds were stored in sealed pouches in the customs warehouse under his custody.
The CBI alleged that Kuppan had conspired with jeweller S Sanjeev Kumar and diamond merchant Jawaharlal Nahar (who died later) to steal a pouch containing 1238.65 carats of diamonds. They reportedly replaced it with non-valuable materials and sold the diamonds through associates, earning lakhs.
In 2010, a stock verification revealed only packing materials in the pouch, prompting the CBI’s involvement. Despite extensive investigations, including 19 witness testimonies and forensic analysis, the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The seized diamonds would be returned to the customs department and other items to their respective parties, the court ruled.

Explained: Why India did not name a vice captain for Bangladesh Test series | Cricket News

Explained: Why India did not name a vice captain for Bangladesh Test series

NEW DELHI: Who will captain India if Rohit Sharma gets injured ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh or during the match itself? According to convention, the team’s vice-captain would step in to lead in the absence of the regular skipper.
However, with no vice-captain named for the Bangladesh Test series, the question of who will take charge remains unanswered.
During the England series that occurred earlier this year, Jasprit Bumrah served as Rohit’s second-in-command.
India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar addressed the matter and clarified that the team does not require a designated vice-captain. He emphasized that the team already has numerous individuals who possess leadership qualities and have previously held captaincy roles at the highest level of the sport.
“I think we need to understand that we have got a lot of IPL captains in this team. When you talk about the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, hopefully Yashasvi going forward. There are a lot of players who have led their franchises,” Nayar told the media on the eve of the 2nd Test in Kanpur.
“I wouldn’t look at them as youngsters any more. Yes, they are youngsters in terms of age and the amount of cricket they have played. But, I think overall, mentally and in their development as a cricketer, I think they have the leadership qualities that are required. You don’t need to have a vice-captain that should be designated,” he added.
About the team combination for the match, Nayar said that the nature of the pitch and overhead conditions on the morning of the match will influence the decision-making.
“To be honest, I don’t know which surface we are going to play on yet. Both the pitches look pretty good. Kanpur is often known to have good pitches. I am not sure about the bounce yet,” Nayar said.
“With the conditions and the forecast, it is going to be interesting, when we turn up in the morning, how the conditions are. A lot will depend on that because as you know in Test wicket, conditions can be a huge factor in how the pitch plays.
“It is too early for us to judge and decide or have any sort of thought process on the pitch or the conditions. But we are hoping we come in tomorrow to a sunny day and not an overcast Kanpur,” he said, adding that all the players are available, fit and ready to go.

Websites leaking Aadhaar and PAN card details: What IT ministry said in its ‘ban order’

Websites leaking Aadhaar and PAN card details: What IT ministry said in its ‘ban order’

The government has blocked websites that reportedly exposed sensitive information, including Aadhaar and PAN Card details of citizens. Reports suggested that at least two websites were leaking personal identifiable data, and both the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) were looking into the issue.
“The Government of India is committed to have an open, safe & trusted and accountable internet. It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) that some websites were exposing sensitive personal identifiable information including Aadhaar and PAN Card details of Indian citizens. This has been taken up seriously as the Government accords highest priority to safe cyber security practices and protection of personal data,” the IT ministry said in a statement.

Aadhaar data leak: Actions taken by UIDAI and CERT-In

The UIDAI lodged a complaint with the authorities concerned for violation of the prohibition under section 29(4) of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 on public display of Aadhaar information.
Meanwhile, CERT-In analysed these websites and suggested some security flaws in these websites. The owners of these websites have been provided guidance about the actions to be taken at their end.
According to a report by Moneycontrol, two websites, Indian Aerospace and Engineering and The Star Kidz, were found to be leaking Aadhaar data. Indian Aerospace and Engineering, a Navi-Mumbai based institute focused on aircraft maintenance, was still exposing this sensitive information as of midday on September 26, the report added.
The Star Kidz, which is an online platform for children’s development, had a URL leaking Aadhaar details until September 25, but it has since been deactivated. The issue was first highlighted on social media by Debarghya Das, a venture capitalist at Menlo Ventures.
CERT-In has issued “Guidelines for Secure Application Design, Development, Implementation & Operations” for all entities using IT applications. CERT-In has also given directions under the Information Technology Act, 2000, (“IT Act”) relating to information security practices, procedure, prevention, response and reporting of cyber incidents.
Notably, any adversely affected party can approach the Adjudicating Officer under section 46 of the IT Act for filing a complaint and seeking compensation.

How undiagnosed congenital heart disease can cause trouble in adults

How undiagnosed congenital heart disease can cause trouble in adults

Undiagnosed Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is an uncommon heart issue in adults. CHD entails structural heart defects present from birth, such as holes in the heart, narrowing of heart valves or arteries, or abnormal connections within the heart. These defects often go unnoticed due to a lack of awareness or the limited availability of diagnostic tools.Adults with CHD typically exhibit symptoms like breathlessness on exertion, and Syncope or excessive tiredness. This may be due to high lung pressures, or significantly decreased heart function due to structural defects in the heart, also their oxygen saturation may decrease significantly. These defects are often detected during routine check-ups required for employment, sports participation, or during a pregnancy.
For diagnosis of CHD, a thorough evaluation by Echocardiography is essential. Some cases may also require advanced imaging techniques such as CT scans, MRIs, or cardiac catheterization. With comprehensive evaluation, many of these defects can be effectively corrected, allowing individuals to lead near-normal lives. Like in the case of a 27-year-old pregnant woman, who complained of mild breathlessness during her pregnancy evaluation, and was checked for the possibility of underlying heart problems. Her Echocardiography was performed, and it was found that one of the valves in her heart had narrowed. She underwent close monitoring throughout her pregnancy while on certain medications and may require surgical valve replacement in the future.

Patients with congenital heart problems may develop acquired heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions as they age, making treatment more complex compared to adults without congenital heart disease. Even though patient outcomes have significantly improved in the past decade for adults with congenital heart disease, however, as symptoms may develop gradually or are mistaken for other conditions, timely diagnosis becomes difficult. Delayed identification can result in advanced disease progression, ultimately affecting the patient’s quality of life and overall health outcomes.

CHDs don’t cause heart attacks as they are usually caused by blockage in the coronary arteries; its symptoms are often difficult to understand. Individuals with undiagnosed CHD may face a host of key issues in their life like, inability to participate in sports, issues in employment, marriage and pregnancy. Patients who undergo cardiac surgery in their childhood to correct the defects, need long-term follow ups to see whether the heart is functioning properly and if lung pressures are normal. Some patients may require repeat surgical procedures or even heart transplants in the future. Therefore, it is essential for all these patients to have regular follow-up appointments with their cardiologist.

Patricia Loison: It makes me happy that I can contribute to the growing relationship between France and India

Patricia Loison: It makes me happy that I can contribute to the growing relationship between France and India

Alliance Française de Delhi recently announced Patricia Loison as its new Director. Born in New Delhi and raised in France, Patricia spoke to us in an interview about her upbringing and her vision for the institute. Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia charted history by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the CannesGrand Prix award for ‘All We Imagine as Light’.
Patricia Loison shares, “I was proud, as someone born here, to see an Indian woman Payal Kapadia celebrated for her independent work.”
Below are some excerpts from that conversation –
“Exposing our students to the films we screen here can ignite their interest in independent cinema
Indian cinema, especially Bollywood, is what sells the most, and it’s what the Indian audience predominantly watches. However, by investing in and offering a platform for independent cinema, Alliance Française de Delhi is sharing French and European culture with young Indian audiences. By showcasing independent films, Alliance Française also provides opportunities for the audience to engage with global cinema.
Patricia spoke about the importance of understanding students’ motivations for learning French. She explained, “When we identify why students want to learn French, it helps us curate better language courses. Sometimes, they need French because they want to spend time in Canada or Africa to start a business. We need to be hands-on in understanding these motivations and tailoring our courses to meet their specific needs. It’s a little less romantic and more practical. For students applying for jobs or internships, we offer interview preparation in French. We also provide industry-specific training for companies that need to upskill their staff. The demand is here, but we need to be kind of a modern school – rooted in our culture while staying relevant to current trends.”
Young Indians learning at Alliance Française de Delhi are also benefiting from the institute’s adaptation to the evolving landscape of social media and corporate needs, which is influencing how modern languages are taught today.
Patricia says that exposing students to French independent films can spark their interest in exploring India’s independent cinema as well.

‘Writing became a way for me to reclaim the narrative of my life’
Patricia was born in Delhi and was adopted by a young French couple, Gisèle and Christian Loison. Growing up in a Parisian suburb with her adopted brother from Lebanon, Patricia maintained close family ties, particularly enjoying gatherings in Brittany, Normandy, and the French Alps.
Speaking about her childhood, Patricia shared, “The image I had of India as a baby, a little girl, and later as a teenager was quite limited. Most of the images and impressions we had of India were centered around figures like Mother Teresa. For a long time, India in Europe was perceived as a difficult place, where people fought for survival amidst inequality. It didn’t seem attractive at all when I was a teenager – not like the USA, which appeared bright and full of promise at the time.”
She explained that her parents, after adopting her, shared all the information they had, though it was limited. “The nuns who facilitated the adoption either didn’t know much or weren’t willing to share details about my biological family,” she said. “Even if I had wanted to search for my roots, there wasn’t any way. But I didn’t feel the need, because I was so loved and happy in my family. My brother, who was also adopted, and I never felt different, even though our parents were of a different race. We had a strong sense of belonging.”
However, becoming a mother stirred unexpected emotions. “When I became a mother, everything came back to me intensely. I felt completely lost. I even got physically ill from the emotions. I later read that for adoptees, especially women, becoming a mother can trigger powerful feelings. Writing became my outlet. I wrote about my experience, my Indian roots, and my sense of belonging in France. It helped me reclaim the narrative of my life, even though there are still missing pieces. I also wanted to leave something for my daughters, so that, in the future, they could look back and understand more.”
‘I’ve always been a suburban girl, never quite the ‘Emily in Paris’ type’
Patricia expressed her excitement about rediscovering the city of her birth. “I don’t know much about Delhi, as I was raised in Europe, mostly in Paris. I’ve always been a suburban girl, not the ‘Emily in Paris’ type, if you know what I mean,” she joked. “Now, being here in Delhi, I’m enjoying the contrasts. The area around us, where we work with Alliance Française and the French embassy, is quite privileged- green, peaceful, and beautiful.”
She sees her role as an opportunity to build bridges between France and India. “The connections are already there, but I want to contribute in my own way. I was moved when I saw a video of the French President visiting Jaipur, and Indian students sharing how much they enjoyed their time in France. These students, who immerse themselves in the language and culture, will strengthen ties between the two nations in economics, politics, and culture as they grow into their roles. That’s what makes me happy.”

India’s Karnataka plans tax waivers for hybrid cars, incentives for EVs

India's Karnataka plans tax waivers for hybrid cars, incentives for EVs

NEW DELHI: India’s southern state of Karnataka plans to cut levies and offer financial incentives to companies in the clean mobility sector, including a steep tax cut for hybrid cars that will be a boost for Toyota, a draft of a state government document showed.
While India has focused on exemptions for electric cars, the move could make the state, home to the tech hub of Bengaluru, the second after northern Uttar Pradesh to provide tax breaks to hybrid cars, for which Toyota has lobbied New Delhi.
Karnataka, which racks up India’s third-highest sales of electric vehicles (EVs), aims to drop road tax and registration charges for hybrid cars costing less than $30,000, versus 13% to 18% now, according to the draft seen by Reuters.
The state aims to boost “clean mobility vehicle adoption,” which includes EVs, certain hybrids and hydrogen-based vehicles, it said in the draft, which set no deadline to finalise and unveil the policy.
The state’s transport department did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Toyota’s push is at odds with rivals such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra which want to keep the focus on EVs, saying incentives for hybrids would hurt India’s goals for their adoption.
State road and registration taxes are charged on top of federal sales tax of 5 per cent for EVs and up to 43 per cent for hybrids.
Additionally, Karnataka plans to offer incentives of up to 25 per cent on capital investments by makers of electric vehicles or their components, varying according to investment size and the numbers employed, the draft showed.
The draft shows Karnataka is likely to offer financial incentives ranging from 15 per cent to 25 per cent of the investment made by companies in fixed assets, such as land and machinery, for new factories or to expand existing ones.
These will also apply to makers of battery components or EV charging gear, the draft showed.
The state’s government has previously said it plans to raise up to $6 billion in new investments through a clean mobility policy, but has not made any other details public.
Indian states are trying to outdo each other in investments and tax incentives to lure the EV industry, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on boosting adoption of such cars to reduce pollution and cut the fuel import bill.
India’s car sales of 4.2 million in the 2023/24 financial year included fewer than 100,000 units each of hybrids and EVs. By 2030, India aims to boost the share of fully electric vehicles to 30 per cent of new car sales.
