When Does Your Bank Account Become Inoperative & Steps to Reactivate It

Know dormant bank account rules

Know dormant bank account rules

Know what to do with your inactive and dormant bank account

In the banking sector, maintaining the activity of bank accounts is crucial for both customers and financial institutions. When a savings or current account remains inactive for an extended period, it is classified as inoperative or dormant. To ensure proper management and compliance, banks are also required to follow guidelines set by the RBI. At the same time, customers also enjoy certain rights to reclaim their accounts and get the deposits.

When Does a Bank Account Become Inactive

A savings or current account is classified as inoperative or dormant if there are no transactions for over two years. Such inactive accounts must be segregated and maintained in separate ledgers by banks.

Unclaimed Deposits

Savings or current account balances that remain unoperated for 10 years, or term deposits that are not claimed within 10 years of maturity, are classified as “Unclaimed Deposits.”

These funds are transferred by banks to the “Depositor Education and Awareness” (DEA) Fund managed by the Reserve Bank of India. However, depositors retain the right to claim their deposits from the respective bank at a later date, along with any applicable interest.

Does the Bank Give Interest On Inoperative Account?

According to RBI regulations, interest on savings bank accounts must be credited regularly, regardless of whether the account is active. Additionally, if a Fixed Deposit matures and the proceeds remain unpaid, the unclaimed amount held by the bank will earn interest at the savings bank rate.

According to State Bank of India, a savings or current account will be considered inoperative if there are no ‘customer-induced transactions’, such as;

The transactions in account which are in the nature of:

  • A financial transaction initiated by the account holder or on their behalf by the bank or a third party, such as cash withdrawals/deposits, RTGS, NEFT, NACH, dividend payments, etc., or;
  • A non-financial transaction initiated by the account holder, such as an inquiry or a request for any product/service through an ATM, internet banking, or mobile banking app, or via Third Party Application Providers, which involves two-factor authentication (2FA) and leaves an audit trail, or a successful login to internet/mobile banking applications, or;
  • KYC updates are conducted in person or through digital channels like Internet banking or mobile banking apps.

Impact of an Account Become Inoperative:

Once an account is classified as inoperative, debit transactions will be prohibited unless new KYC documents are submitted.

How To Revive An Inoperative Bank Account:

Process of activation of Accounts:

  • Customers with an inoperative account are required to visit the bank with their latest KYC documents.
  • A formal request must be submitted to the branch for account activation.
  • The branch will reactivate the account upon verification of the submitted KYC documents.
  • Once activated, customers will be notified via SMS or email.
  • All account activation requests will be processed within three working days from the receipt of the complete application.

Rezwan Rabbani Sheikh and Jyotirmoyee Kundu starrer ‘Bodhua’ to go off-air in just six months

Rezwan Rabbani Sheikh and Jyotirmoyee Kundu starrer ‘Bodhua’ to go off-air in just six months

Another Bengali serial is set to bite the dust before Durga Puja this year. A popular Bengali television channel is gearing up to conclude a prime time TV serial at the end of September. This time, it’s Rezwan Rabbani Sheikh and Jyotirmoyee Kundu starrer ‘Bodhua’ that’s wrapping up. The Bengali TV serial that started its journey earlier this year is only 6 months old. However, the rating of the serial hasn’t been promising and that reportedly is the reason behind the show’s conclusion.
‘Bodhua’ began with a story that delved into the struggles of Pekham, a modern, independent woman with a daunting past.She dealt with complex emotions, hiding her pain from those close to her. Pekham faced immense challenges as her inner struggles took centre stage and she preferred to live discretely with her parents, away from the crowd. On the other hand, Abir, who was deeply, madly and unconditionally in love with Pekham, lived in a close-knit big fat joint family.
After their marriage, Pekham found it extremely difficult to come close to her husband Abir and confide in him or even have a normal conjugal life. While Abir didn’t understand the reason for such a dilemma, he promised to stand by her as a steadfast source of strength and love. He tried to bridge the emotional gap between them with his unwavering support for Pekham.
‘Bodhua’ also posed a few compelling questions which included Pekham’s capability to be able to break her shackles and confide in her husband Abir. The storyline of the show charted the course where Abir was seen practising acceptance for Pekham and her past trauma and continuing loving her.
Although ‘Bodhua’ began with a promising storyline, the show failed to pull in the audience and keep up with a consistent rating. After a run for 6 months, the Bengali serial is set to go off-air. Newbie Jyotirmoyee Kundu played the character of Pekham and Abir was played by Rezwan Rabbani Sheikh.

This report came after Us Weekly provided a much more pleasant narrative of Meghan MArkle’s behaviour around staff.

Meghan Markle’s former staff members have spoken out, and while some described her as ambitious and hardworking, others referred to her as a “demon” and “psycho”. This revelation comes after a recent article in US Weekly sought to portray Markle in a better light as a good boss who buys her staff bunches of fresh flowers and home-grown eggs, making them feel like seeds being watered.

The Daily Beast reported that while some of her former staff members testified Markle was caring, there were others subjected to threatening behaviour by her. One anonymous source, who worked with Meghan when she was still a member of the royal family said, “There definitely were bad, very bad, even psycho moments”. According to this source, people have been more focused on Markle after she left her royal duties stating that other royals like Princess Margaret and Prince Andrew have been involved in some similar acts yet they continue to hold their royal duties.

The major gripe stemmed from a memo sent by Markle’s ex-press secretary, Jason Knauf, complaining about her treatment of the palace staff. In the complaint, Knauf accused her of bullying two personal assistants to resign and was determined to destabilise another.

In 2018, Knauf wrote to Prince William’s then-private secretary Simon Case, saying: “I am very concerned that the duchess was able to bully two PAs out of the household in the past year. The treatment of X was totally unacceptable.”

This letter, which came to public domain before Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, was also used as the confirmation of a toxic workplace.

The Duchess of Sussex previously accused the London Times of seeking to smear her when it published the Knauf letter, pointing out that the revelations were published shortly before her highly anticipated interview with Winfrey.

Josh Kettler, who was employed by Prince Harry and Markle for only a short time, told the Daily Beast that the two were committed and diligent workers but did not explain why he left after working for the couple for three months only. Similarly, few other former aides spoke only good things about the couple and their experience working with them.

This report came after Us Weekly provided a much more pleasant narrative including positive remarks from Ben Browning, who worked on her and Prince Harry’s documentary for Netflix in 2022 and Catherine St-Laurent, their former chief of staff, who said she had nice interactions with them and supported the couple.

But the Hollywood Reporter provided a different view of events with insiders citing her as belittling her staff and becoming a “dictator in high heels.” A source said that he witnessed her causing grown men to cry.

Over the years, both Markle and Prince Harry have had their problems with high staff turnover rates. Earlier this year, Buckingham Palace reportedly looked into allegations of bullying against the Duchess but the outcome was never disclosed to the public.

Sean Payton's Controversial Critique of Nathaniel Hackett Ignites Aaron Rodgers' Fury Over Offensive Coordinator's Reputation
