'Agency is biased': Karnataka withdraws 'open consent' to CBI to probe cases amid Muda scam

In a significant move, the Congress-led Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka on Thursday withdrew its ‘open consent’ to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct investigations in the state.
According to Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946, the CBI must obtain consent from the respective state governments to conduct investigations.
Karnataka law minister HK Patil said: “We are withdrawing open consent for CBI investigation in the state. We are expressing our concerns about the misuse of the CBI. In all the cases we have referred to the CBI, they have not filed charge sheets, leaving many cases pending. They have also refused to investigate several cases we have sent. There are numerous such instances. They are biased. That’s why we are taking the decision. It’s not because of the MUDA case. We have taken this decision to control them (CBI) from taking the wrong path.”
The decision comes days after the Karnataka high court ordered a probe into the Muda scam.
An order passed by the Karnataka cabinet stated that the Chief Secretary and other officials will not provide any information requested by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot without cabinet approval.

Khatron Ke Khiladi 14: Shalin Bhanot attempts a daredevil stunt as he takes another step towards the trophy |

Khatron Ke Khiladi 14: Shalin Bhanot attempts a daredevil stunt as he takes another step towards the trophy

Khatron Ke Khiladi 14 has kept viewers on the edge of their seats. The show’s winner will be revealed over the weekend. Ahead of the show’s grand finale, it has managed to generate a lot of interest. As fans count down the days before the finale, the producers released an exciting promo featuring finalist Shalin Bhanot attempting yet another risky manoeuvre.
According to the show’s new commercial, Shalin Bhanot is dubbed The Showman after performing a spectacular feat in the show’s grand finale. Shalin is seen jumping from one automobile to another in his search for flags. The catch is that the cars are suspended in the air, attached to a harness. Bhanot demonstrates his power and determination by jumping from one car to another and saluting Lord Ram.
Shalin Bhanot experienced a roller coaster journey in Khatron Ke Khiladi 14. While he began as a strong competitor, he lost his form on several occasions. He was frequently chastised for failing to follow the stunts’ rules and standards, and he even abandoned a number of them before performing them.
Shalin stopped the tear gas stunt at the first phase and left the work in seconds. He didn’t try to obtain flags in the ostrich stunt and gave up quickly as well. He was placed in the ice-cold water tank as part of the final stunt ticket. He lost his patience and calm as soon as he entered the tank and called off the act. Meanwhile, Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia won the stunt, staying in the tank for ten minutes.
While Shalin was frequently chastised for aborting feats and taking a few stunts lightly, he returned to the competition a few weeks ago, promising host Rohit Shetty that he’d perform well and make it to the final. Interestingly, the actor did exactly what he said. While spectators expected Gashmeer Mahajani to become the show’s second finalist, Shalin Bhanot proved his mettle by defeating Mahajani in a stunt. He outperformed Mahajani and made Rohit Shetty pleased by executing the stunt on time.
The Khatron Ke Khiladi 14 grand finale promos have already been released, sparking fans’ intrigue and enthusiasm. The big finale of the show will feature Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina promoting their film Jigra.
Finalist Abhishek Kumar told Alia Bhatt an amazing story from the sets of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, as Kumar was a crowd artist in the film and was on set for almost 22 days. He explained how he wanted to take a picture with Bhatt, but her security officers shooed him away. Alia felt awful after hearing the story, so she asked Kumar to take photographs with her, leaving him captivated.

Ouch! Shalin Bhanot STUNG by 200 Scorpions on Khatron Ke Khiladi 14!

Apart from Alia and Vedang, the grand finale episode of Khatron Ke Khiladi 14 will feature Laughter Chefs Unlimited Entertainment stars Bharti Singh, Kashmeera Shah, and Nia Sharma.

Stories of ‘unseen forces that shape our economy’ | Events Movie News

Stories of ‘unseen forces that shape our economy’

Sixteen-year-old Suhanaa Setty recently released her debut book, Invisible Hands of the Indian Economy. This work shines a spotlight on the overlooked contributions of women across India, challenging traditional economic narratives that often disregard their essential yet invisible roles.
The book captures the untold stories of 22 women from diverse backgrounds—ranging from homemakers to construction workers—highlighting their significant but unacknowledged contributions to the economy.Through evocative black-and-white imagery and personal anecdotes, Setty underscores how women’s work, while vital to the economy, remains unaccounted for in National Income Accounting (NIA) frameworks.
Invisible Hands of the Indian Economy invites readers to reconsider what defines economic value, advocating for a broader and more inclusive understanding of GDP that recognises women’s unpaid and often unrecognised labour in areas like household management, agriculture, and small-scale industries. Setty shares stories of women like Ratna and Parmila, who break societal norms and contribute significantly to their communities despite facing educational and cultural barriers.
This anthology of sorts not only celebrates the resilience of these women but also serves as a call to action for policymakers, economists, and society to integrate these invisible contributions into economic discourse. It is a timely and crucial addition to discussions on gender and economics, appealing to students, academicians, policymakers, and anyone interested in social justice and gender studies.
“It is more than just a book or illustrated narratives; it challenges us to rethink the traditional metrics of economic progress. Through the lives and stories of these twenty-two women, it urges a recognition of the unseen labour that sustains our households, communities, and, ultimately, the nation,” shares Suhanaa Setty.

Divya Dutta faces 'horrendous' situation at Mumbai T2 airport, lashes out at airline

Actress Divya Dutta, who is known for ‘Veer-Zara’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘, ‘Badlapur‘ and others, had a horrible experience at the Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
On Thursday, the actress took to her Instagram during the wee hours, and shared a short video from the airport. In the caption, she wrote how the airline didn’t give any prior notification about the cancellation of the flight, and the harassment that followed.
She wrote, “@indigo.6e ! Thankyou for a very horrendous experience in the wee hours. No notification of a cancelled flight. I’m checked in on a cancelled flight. The flight announcement reflects at the gate! No staff to assist! Huge harassment at t gate to exit and no staff from @indigo.6e @indigoairways present…and the high-headed approach to t passengers! My shoot got affected and I’m terribly upset”.
However, the video showed no passengers waiting near the departure gate, raising the doubts of it was an oversight on Divya’s part because if many passengers faced the similar situation there would have been a huge hullabaloo at the airport.
Divya made her debut in Hindi cinema in 1994 with the film ‘Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna’, and later was seen in a string of supporting roles. She then grabbed eyeballs for playing the lead role of Zainab, a Muslim wife separated from her Sikh husband, in the 1999 Punjabi film ‘Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh’. Supreme Court ruling permitted an extension of the entrance deadline for technical colleges to October 23. (Representational/File)

The AICTE has pushed the deadline for lateral admissions into the second year of technical programmes to October 23.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has updated the academic calendar for the 2024-25 session. Under the revised schedule, the final date for first-year students to be admitted against vacancies has been extended to October 23. Additionally, the commencement date for classes for first-year students in technical courses has also been changed to October 23.

This adjustment comes in response to a Supreme Court ruling that permitted an extension of the entrance deadline for technical colleges to October 23, which was previously set for September 15.

However, this extension does not apply to independent institutions offering Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) programs. These colleges are required to adhere to their original admissions schedules, which remain unchanged.

Additionally, the AICTE has extended the deadline for lateral admissions into the second year of technical programs to October 23, moving it from the previously set date of September 15. The updated academic schedule for the 2024-25 session is available on the official AICTE website at aicte-india.org.

Also, according to the latest notification, the educational institutes do not require any prior approval or NOC from AICTE for offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Postgraduate diploma programmes under the disciplines of Management, Computer Application and Travel and Tourism in ODL and/or online mode.

The official notification reads, “The Commission considered the communication received from AICTE stating that as per Hon’ble Supreme Court Judgement in Bharathidasan University and Another Vs. All India Council for Technical Education and Others (2001) 8 SCC 676, it is not mandatory for the State/Private Universities to take AICTE approval to run Technical programmes.”

The AICTE has also maintained its stand on the unapproved education institutions offering technical programmes. Institutions that operate without proper Council approval or in unapproved locations will be labelled as “unapproved” and may be closed or subject to penalties.

Any institution seeking permission must follow the procedures outlined by the AICTE and students enrolled prior to approval must be readmitted under the new guidelines.

For any additional information, candidates are advised to visit the official website of the All India Council for Technical Education at aicte-india.org.

Renowned Malayalam actor Siddique has been in the headlines after he was accused of sexually assaulting a female actor. The Kerala High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail plea and the actor was reported to be missing following this development. Amidst this, the Kerala Police has issued a lookout notice against the actor.

As per a report published by India Today, the lookout notice against actor Siddique has been issued to all police chiefs of all districts in Kerala. The police are suspecting that the actor might have fled the state. The police have shared his information with all police stations in the state. On September 24, the Kerala High Court dismissed the anticipatory bail plea filed by the 61-year-old actor. The actor moved to the Supreme Court to challenge this verdict. US and allies call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah

US and allies call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah

NEW YORK: The US, France and other allies jointly called Wednesday for an immediate 21-day cease-fire to allow for negotiations in the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has killed more than 600 people in Lebanon in recent days.
The joint statement, negotiated on the sidelines of the UN. General Assembly in New York, says the recent fighting is “intolerable and presents an unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation.”
“We call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire across the Lebanon-Israel border to provide space for diplomacy,” the statement said.”We call on all parties, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the temporary cease-fire immediately.”
There was no immediate reaction from the Israeli or Lebanese governments – or Hezbollah – but senior US officials said all parties were aware of the call for a cease-fire. Earlier, representatives for Israel and Lebanon reiterated their support for a UN resolution that ended the 2006 war between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group.
The US hopes the new deal could lead to longer-term stability along the border between Israel and Lebanon. Months of Israeli and Hezbollah exchanges of fire have driven tens of thousands of people from their homes, and escalated attacks over the past week have rekindled fears of a broader war in the Middle East.
The US officials said Hezbollah would not be a signatory to the cease-fire but believed the Lebanese government would coordinate its acceptance with the group. They said they expected Israel to “welcome” the proposal and perhaps formally accept it when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks at the General Assembly on Friday.
While the deal applies only to the Israel-Lebanon border, the US officials said they were looking to use a three-week pause in fighting to restart stalled negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, another Iranian-backed militant group, after nearly a year of war in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s Office said that the ceasefire put forward from the United States and France was only a proposal and the Prime Minister, who is currently on a flight en route to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, has not responded to the proposal.
The US, France and other allies jointly called Wednesday for an immediate 21-day cease-fire to allow for negotiations in the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has killed more than 600 people in Lebanon in recent days.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who is the acting prime minister during Netanyahu’s trip abroad, said that there will be no ceasefire in the north, vowing to continue the fighting in the north “with full force until victory” and returning the tens of thousands of Israeli citizens evacuated from their homes in the north.
The Prime Minister’s Office added that the Israeli military was continuing to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and the war in Gaza.
The allies calling for a halt to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict are the United States, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, the U.K., Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Work on the proposal came together quickly this week with President Joe Biden’s national security team, led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan, meeting with world leaders in New York and lobbying other countries to support the plan, according to US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic conversations.
Blinken first raised the proposal with the French foreign minister Monday and then broadened his outreach that evening at a dinner with the foreign ministers of all the Group of Seven industrialized democracies.
During a meeting Wednesday morning with Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers, Blinken approached Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan to ask their approval and got it. Blinken and senior White House adviser Amos Hochstein then met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who signed off on the deal.
Sullivan, Hochstein and senior adviser Brett McGurk were also in touch with Israeli officials about the proposal, one of the US officials said. McGurk and Hochstein have been the White House’s chief interlocutors with Israel and Lebanon since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas launched the war in Gaza.
The officials said the deal crystallized by late Wednesday afternoon during a conversation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly between Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Blinken expects to meet Netanyahu’s top strategic adviser in New York on Thursday ahead of the prime minister’s arrival.
An Israeli official said Netanyahu has given the green light to pursue a possible deal, but only if it includes the return of Israeli civilians to their homes. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing behind-the-scenes diplomacy.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told the UN Security Council during a special meeting that “we are counting on both parties to accept it without delay” and added that “war is not unavoidable.”
At the meeting, Mikati, the Lebanese prime minister, publicly threw his support behind the French-US plan that “enjoys international support and which would put an end to this dirty war.”
He called on the Security Council “to guarantee the withdrawal of Israel from all the occupied Lebanese territories and the violations that are repeated on a daily basis.”
Israel’s UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, told journalists that Israel would like to see a cease-fire and the return of people to their homes near the border: “It will happen, either after a war or before a war. We hope it will be before.”
Addressing the Security Council later, he made no mention of a temporary cease-fire but said Israel “does not seek a full-scale war.”
Both Danon and Mikati reaffirmed their governments’ commitment to a Security Council resolution that ended the 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah war. Never fully implemented, it called for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon to be replaced by Lebanese forces and UN peacekeepers, and the disarmament of all armed groups including Hezbollah.
Earlier Wednesday, Biden warned in an appearance on ABC’s “The View” that “an all-out war is possible” but said he thinks the opportunity also exists “to have a settlement that can fundamentally change the whole region.”
Biden suggested that getting Israel and Hezbollah to agree to a cease-fire could help achieve a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
That war is approaching the one-year mark after Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking hostages. Israel responded with an offensive that has since killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, who do not provide a breakdown of civilians and fighters in their count.
“It’s possible and I’m using every bit of energy I have with my team … to get this done,” Biden said. “There’s a desire to see change in the region.”
The US government also raised the pressure with additional sanctions targeting more than a dozen ships and other entities it says were involved in illicit shipments of Iranian petroleum for the financial benefit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah.
