Former Atletico Madrid Defender Felipe Luis Replaces Ex-Brazil Coach Tite to Take Managerial Reins at Flamengo

Former Brazil coach Tite was fired on Monday by Flamengo, his first job after taking the national team to the past two World Cups. His replacement for the rest of the year will be former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis, a multi-champion at the Rio de Janeiro club and coach of one of its youth divisions.

Flamengo announced the move in a statement, less than a day after its 1-0 home win over Athletico Paranaense in the Brazilian league. Tite’s contract ran until the end of the year.

Last week, Flamengo was knocked out by Uruguay’s Penarol in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. It is currently fourth in the Brazilian league with 48 points in 27 matches, 11 points behind leader Botafogo.

Flamengo will face Corinthians in the semifinals of the Brazilian Cup on Wednesday, in a tournament that provides its high spending squad a last chance to win a major trophy this year.

The 63-year-old Tite captured his only title with Flamengo in April, a Rio state championship trophy. He left Brazil after the 2022 World Cup in the wake of the team’s quarterfinals elimination against Croatia. He also took Brazil to the 2018 World Cup, where his team was knocked out by Belgium in the quarterfinals.

Flamengo fans booed Tite during his team’s last minute 1-0 victory against Athletico Paranaense at the Maracana Stadium.

A wholesome moment between Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick and Toni Fernandez is going viral on social media.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick’s reaction to Toni Fernandez climbing over his seat with dirty boots has started a buzz on the social media. The Catalan giants extended their undefeated LaLiga run this season against Villarreal last weekend. Barcelona scored five against them at El Madrigal on September 22 to maintain the top spot on the La Liga points table.

In a wholesome moment during the game, Flick could be seen staring down 16-year-old Toni. The teenager had found the way to his seat in the dugout by climbing over Flick’s chair. Upon discovering Toni’s act, a smile broke on the German manager’s face.

The video begins with Toni Fernandez finding all ways to his seat completely blocked off. But the youngster found a solution by putting his foot on Flick’s seat to get back to his chair.

Moments later, the German coach could be seen approaching the bench before turning towards his seat. Looking at the foot impression on his chair, Flick instantly looked at Toni who nodded his head with a smile on his face.

Eventually, the German laughed it off before wiping the chair clean with his hands.

Speaking of Toni, the teenage footballer is one of the most promising players in Barcelona academy. The 16-year-old recently became the youngest footballer to score a goal for the club’s reserve team. He netted a spectacular overhead kick in a 3-0 victory against Ourense, sparking plenty of discussion around his talent and ability.

Earlier this month, Toni and his cousin Guille were called up for the club’s Champions League match against AS Monaco. Their presence was required as Spanish star Dani Olmo suffered an injury a few weeks ago.

The duo of Toni and Guille was also included in Barcelona’s squad during their trip to Villarreal. The team did not have to bank on the youngsters as Barcelona stars, including Robert Lewandoski, Raphina and Pablo Torre combined for five goals. Toni and Guille are yet to secure first-team action for the Spanish giants this season.

Barcelona are next set to take on Getafe in La Liga. The match will take place at the Estadi Olympic Lluis Companys on Thursday, September 26.

Why Turkey Wants to Join BRICS and Why India is Important for It Now | Explainer

Turkish President Erdogan, known to criticize India over the Kashmir problem chose to keep silent in the United National General Assembly and did not say a word in criticism of India.

This has led to speculations that India has become important for Turkey because it intends to join the BRICS group which has India, Brazil, Russia, South Africa and China as its members.

Turkey has applied for full membership of the BRICS group. To include Turkey as one of its members, all the member countries have to agree to it.

In the recent past, there has been some discomfort in Turkey’s relations with the major countries of NATO. Several challenges have mounted up before Turkey in the European economy, and hence it is on the lookout for new markets. Turkey is also keen on building a different identity for itself in the changing global era, which can give it more strength.

Why Do Turkey, Which is in Europe and a part of NATO Want to Join BRICS?

Turkey is looking for new economic platforms outside Europe. It is believed that by joining BRICS, Turkey aims to strengthen its role as a bridge between the East and the West, which will increase its strategic importance in international affairs.

Turkey wants to bring changes in its foreign policy, which will bring about a change in its image of aspiring to be a leader of all Islamic countries. A change in Turkey’s attitude has been recently observed. It seems to be moving away from its hardline Muslim-centric approach.

BRICS Largely Works As An Economic Organization. How Can It Help Turkey?

BRICS may provide Turkey access to new markets. By joining BRICS, Turkey can get easy access to emerging markets and its trade relations can be diversified.

Till now, Turkey’s economy was dependent on the European market, which has declined in the last few years. The attempt to become the leader of the Islamic countries could not help Turkey in creating a Muslim market for itself. Now, Turkey wants to get its foothold in two largest Asian markets- China and India. Out of these two, it is mainly targeting the Indian market.

What Other Benefits Can Turkey Reap From Joining BRICS?

Turkey estimates that close relations with the BRICS countries can attract new investments. It can create employment opportunities for itself. It also sees the possibility of funding from the BRICS New Development Bank for infrastructure and renewable energy projects.

Are Changing Equations In the World Forcing Turkey To Take Such A Step?

According to analysts, Turkey’s changing tone is more about making a place for itself in the changing geopolitical scenario. Turkish President Erdogan, who was usually seen taking aggressive stances is now showing signs of being restrained. There is a change in the tone and content of his speeches in global forums.

In BRICS, Brazil, China and India are currently emerging as the world’s largest economies. By joining BRICS, Turkey will place itself in a group that advocates a more equitable global order, challenging the dominance of West-led institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank.

This can also be a strategy aimed at maintaining relations with both Eastern and Western powers. This dual approach can make Turkey a major player on the global stage.

What effect will Turkey’s efforts to join BRICS have on its relationship with NATO?

Turkey’s desire to join BRICS is being seen as part of its broader strategy to diversify its international partnerships beyond the West. This move allows Turkey to assert its autonomy in foreign policy while maintaining its membership in NATO. Analysts believe that Turkey will not exit from NATO but will try to boost its geopolitical advantage by joining both Western and non-Western powers.

Will this move worry NATO?

The presence of countries like Russia and China in the BRICS group and Turkey’s move for its membership in the bloc will undoubtedly worry NATO. Membership in BRICS can certainly be considered to be contrary to the spirit of NATO. There will be conflict of interests which will affect Turkey’s relations with other NATO members. For instance, when Turkey purchased Russia’s S-400 missile system, it led to tension among the NATO countries. Hence this move is bound to complicate Turkey’s trade relations with its NATO allies.

However, this economic diversification will be important for Turkey. This is because Turkey is currently facing challenges in the process of joining the European Union. In any case, Turkey’s relations with the NATO countries have entered a stage of uneasiness.

Will this further increase Turkey’s regional influence?

Turkey’s possible BRICS membership can increase its influence in the Balkan, Middle East and Central Asia. This can establish it as a major player in global affairs.

Will this also affect its relations with Muslim countries?

Turkey’s participation in BRICS could facilitate stronger diplomatic and economic ties with Muslim-majority countries, such as Iran and Egypt, which have not been the case so far.

However, many Muslim countries, including Iran and Egypt, did not like Turkey’s attempt to establish itself as a leader within the Islamic world.

What is the status of Turkey’s membership in BRICS at present? Has Turkey applied for it?

According to a senior Kremlin official, Turkey has officially applied for full membership in the BRICS group of emerging economies. In September 2024, President Putin’s foreign affairs advisor Yuri Ushakov confirmed that Turkey had submitted an application “for full membership” in BRICS. Turkish President Erdogan has expressed in several occasions that Turkey intends to join BRICS.

Russia is currently chairing the BRICS group. It said that Turkey’s application for membership will be considered. The 2024 BRICS summit is scheduled to be held in Russia next month, in which the expansion of the group and the possible membership of Turkey can be considered.

How many full members are there in BRICS? When did it start?

BRICS took shape as a group in September 2006. It was started by Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). After South Africa was accepted as a full member in September 2010, its name was changed to BRICS.

However, now the bloc has a total of 10 full members. The new full members are Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In recent times, it has been seen that Muslim and African countries are being attracted to this organization.

Opinion | A Taste of Sacrilege: The Nationalisation of Hinduism Is The Original Sin

A fouled gun cartridge, in its time, has been known to spark an insurrection, but a laddoo?

While the jury is still out on who greased the holy laddoos offered at the Tirumala-Tirupati temple with the unction of the devil, one shouldn’t underestimate their power to trigger sectarian anxiety. The Hindus who turned on the British in 1857 for handing them gun cartridges greased with beef tallow and pork lard are still very much around. All those years later, some may have embraced a few Western mores, but they are yet to lose their distaste for beef, pork, or fish – the blasphemous medley that was allegedly mixed into Tirumala-Tirupati laddoos.

And had the Laddoos not been a deified symbol of Hindu sacrosanctity, one doubts if the Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu would have made much of their supposed adulteration.

For this act of sacrilege, Naidu solely blames his predecessor, YSRCP supremo Jagan Reddy. Naidu is convinced that Reddy conspired to contract dairy suppliers of dubious bona fides to cut costs on purchasing pure ghee. The penny pinching, a show of disrespect to the resident deity, reportedly compromised the sanctity of the revered confections that are created in the Tirumala-Tirupati temple kitchen. At least that’s what Naidu has alleged.

The former Andhra Chief Minister has also struck a defiant posture. Reddy has accused Naidu of running a slander campaign.

But the damage has been done. By all accounts, Naidu’s revelations have stuck. And it doesn’t help former CM Reddy’s case that he is a practising Christian. Luckily, angry Hindus haven’t spilled out onto the streets.

While that’s a relief, what isn’t is that very few have paused to check the veracity of the “facts” put out by Naidu. Fewer still, are ready to accept the possibility that Naidu’s claims could be part of a larger, daresay, cynical communal plot.

The incumbent Chief Minister’s critics, especially arch foe Jagan Reddy’s supporters, say Naidu is trying to position himself as Andhra’s king of Hindu hearts. Naidu hopes, so the theory goes, to outflank his allies the BJP and Pavan Kalyan, who are both past masters at playing the Hindu card. Naidu, who is playing the long game, is convinced that winning the race to cement his Hindu credentials can ensure his electoral longevity and also create political space for his son and heir, Nara Lokesh.

As the Naidu camp trades accusations with the Jagan camp, it has become virtually impossible to apportion guilt.

Only an independent inquiry can dredge the truth to the surface. But what some Hindu well-wishers are thankful for is that in the interim, la-affaire laddoo has finally brought the focus back to the nationalisation of Hinduism.

It’s a travesty that Hindus in the land of their birth have had to cede to the state control of their customs, practices, and places of worship.

It is a shame that only Hindu religious customs have been by-and-large codified by the state and not those of other faiths.

It is equally disappointing that the state has cleverly insinuated itself in the business of administering, principally, Hindu temples. The state’s ecclesiastical paternalism mocks at Article 25-28 that guarantee the Right to Freedom of Religion.

It is a scandal that every penny donated by devotees is diverted by the state government for “secular purposes” rather than temple upkeep.

The “nationalisation of Hinduism” is so near total that devotees who cram thousands of hundreds of crores into the donation boxes of the Tirumala-Tirupati temple annually can’t even ensure that their money is being used to prepare kosher Prasadam.

Would the state dream of denying the adherents of other faiths the right to decide how their contribution should be used? No. In fact, the Centre expressly permits Muslim donors via the Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act of 1955 to dictate the specific purpose for which their donations are to be used. Moreover, it allows the devout Muslim donor to demand an audit.

If Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan, and the many BJP saffron plenipotentiaries are truly concerned about “blasphemy” against Hindus, they must punish the original sin. They must dismantle state laws and by-laws that have nationalised Hinduism. For far too long, Hindus have allowed a rootless westernised elite to pass off state subjugation of Hinduism as a secular pursuit.

TNAU to collaborate with Australian institutions for advanced agricultural research

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) will soon sign memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the University of Melbourne and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture in Australia to adopt various modern technologies and promote advanced research, said minister for agriculture and farmers’ welfare M R K Panneerselvam on Thursday. He was speaking at the inauguration of the state-level Mega Farmers’ Day and exhibition at TNAU in Coimbatore.
In his address, Panneerselvam highlighted the evolution of agricultural practices in cultivating crops such as sugarcane, paddy and groundnut, emphasising the use of modern technologies in each farming method.
He said govt aims at mechanising the sector and boosting the export of agricultural products through the adoption of advanced technologies.
He said MoUs had already been signed with the University of Southern Queensland and Western Sydney University in Australia to facilitate research on climate-resilient studies and technologies.
“Soon, TNAU will sign MoUs with the University of Melbourne and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture. We are looking forward to the exchange of ideas to benefit both countries,” he said.
“Agriculture is affected by climate change. Agricultural scientists in TNAU are working on developing new crop varieties to withstand these challenges,” he said. He appealed to students and faculty in agricultural colleges to collaborate actively to further develop the agricultural industry in the state.
During the event, minister for housing and urban development S Muthusamy released a book on rural women agriculturists and young agricultural achievers. Minister for Tamil development, information & publicity MP Saminathan distributed a new crop variety package to farmers. Six farmers from Tamil Nadu were honoured with agricultural excellence awards.
The exhibition has more than 300 stalls showcasing technological advancements, including new crop varieties, crop stimulants, pest-resistant agents, drones, organic farming inputs, nanotechnologies, value-added products, digital agriculture, and irrigation tools. It will conclude on Sept 29. Entry is free.
