Man arrested in Delhi for demanding Rs 5 lakh from 2 bizmen citing ties with gangster Neeraj Bawania

NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old man has been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for demanding Rs 5 lakh in extortion from two businessmen in Delhi, claiming ties to notorious gangster Neeraj Bawania. The accused has been identified as Nitin Manchanda.
According to a senior police officer, the incident came to light when a man received a call on Sept 11, demanding Rs 5 lakhs, followed by threatening calls on Sept 17 and 18.The victim then filed a case at the Rani Bagh Police Station.
The Crime Branch team utilised technical surveillance and secret sources to track down Manchanda, leading to his arrest near Majlis Park Metro Station.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Manchanda had made additional extortion calls to another businessman, resulting in a complaint being filed at the Adarsh Nagar Police Station.
The police recovered a keypad mobile phone and two SIMs that were used for extortion.
Manchanda’s journey into crime began with a promising start. Born in Meham, Rohtak, Haryana, he graduated with a computer hardware diploma.
He even started his own mobile shop and worked for various private companies, including Delhi Metro. However, he grew dissatisfied with his salary and left.
A turning point came when Manchanda got married, but financial struggles persisted. Inspired by gangsters’ extortion tactics on social media, he saw an opportunity for quick money. Manchanda began making extortion calls, leveraging Neeraj Bawania’s notorious name to intimidate victims.
