VIJAYAWADA: As the world observes World Alzheimer’s Day, attention in Andhra Pradesh is drawn to the alarming increase in dementia cases within the state. According to Vivek Srivastav, CEO of HCAH Gachibowli, 7.7% of individuals aged 60 and above in Andhra Pradesh are currently affected by dementia, surpassing the national average of 7.4%.
The rising trend is concerning, with projections indicating that by 2036, approximately 8 lakh individuals in Andhra Pradesh will develop dementia.This significant increase underscores the urgent need for specialised rehabilitation centres and innovative care models tailored to meet the specific needs of dementia patients.
“Dementia cases are rising each year, and proper care and monitoring are essential to identify the issue in its early stages,” Srivastav emphasised. He further explained that the goal of their healthcare approach is to transform the patient experience by providing professional care in environments where individuals feel most at ease. By prioritising the cultural and emotional needs of patients, the initiative aims not only to enhance physical well-being but also to adopt a holistic approach that supports the emotional aspects of life.
World Alzheimer’s Day, celebrated on September 21, serves as a global platform to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This year’s observance calls for increased attention to the critical issue of dementia care, advocating for community support and improved healthcare services for affected individuals.
As Andhra Pradesh faces this growing health challenge, the need for effective strategies and resources to support those living with dementia has never been more pressing.
