‘Fantastic prioritising…’: Lancashire CEO lauds BCCI’s domestic cricket diktat | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Lancashire CEO Daniel Gidney has referred to the BCCI‘s decision to mandate that its established players play domestic cricket as “fantastic prioritising”. He has accused the agents of English players of helping their team’s entry into the lucrative franchise leagues at the expense of the traditional red-ball competition. Gidney believes that the English County Championship‘s future is in jeopardy because of these agents.
All international players, with the exception of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, are required by the BCCI to participate in domestic cricket competitions like the Ranji and Duleep Trophy when they are not occupied with national duties.
Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan lost their central contract deals with the BCCI because they chose to forgo domestic matches in favor of the IPL. While Kishan did not participate in any Ranji games despite constant prodding, Iyer did participate in all of the knockout stages, including the championship match.
Many people agreed with the BCCI’s decision, among them Gidney, one of cricket’s longest-serving chief executive officers.
“Imagine a governing body (BCCI) actually saying that out loud … That was fantastic prioritising,” Gidney was quoted as saying by ‘The Guardian’, as per PTI.
The CEO of Lancashire remarked that the agents “don’t care” about the county game and referred to them as the biggest threat to the English County Championship’s future.
“We need to have more of an open conversation. Coaches get blamed, administrators get blamed, but if you want to blame anybody, blame agents,” Gidney said on the sidelines of a match between Lancashire and Somerset at Old Trafford.
He added, “I think the game as a whole needs to come together to find a way to support the championship.
“England players don’t have to play in the championship, agents don’t care about the championship.”
Gidney suggests that raising the players’ salaries may be beneficial.
“More prize money would help and I think we need to find a way of paying four or five players a lot more money. Instead of GBP 80,000-90,000 being the top domestic salary, we need to find a way of paying GBP 200k … and saying part of that deal is that you don’t play franchise cricket.”
Gidney stated that he is not opposed to players making a decent living by competing in the T20 competitions, but he did ask for a cap on franchise involvement to safeguard first-class cricket. The maximum amount of T20 leagues that a specific professional player can play in.
“They have a career – I’m not begrudging their ability to earn money – but the balance has tipped … When the bottom rung of the Hundred is what a rookie would earn in the championship – who among us would turn down earning more money for less work?”
Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, issued a warning earlier this year to all centrally-contracted Indian players asking them to play domestic cricket matches, citing the serious consequences of not doing so.

How seniors can secure Rs 1 lakh monthly pension with smart investments after retirement

NEW DELHI: Generating a monthly pension of Rs 1 lakh after retirement is a common concern for senior citizens. To achieve this goal, careful planning and consideration of various factors such as inflation, risk appetite, returns, taxation, and liquidity are essential.
According to experts, a corpus of approximately Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 1.5 crore is typically required to generate a monthly pension of Rs 1 lakh, assuming an expected return rate of 8-10%.
Economic Times quoted Soumya Sarkar, co-founder, of Wealth Redefine, saying that, “To achieve a monthly pension of Rs 1 lakh, senior citizens typically need an investment of approximately Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 1.5 crore. This estimate is based on an expected return rate of 8-10%.”
Investment options for seniors: Balancing risk and returns
The investment choices for senior citizens are determined by their risk tolerance. Conservative investors typically prefer debt instruments, including fixed deposits, Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS), Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds, government securities, and debt mutual funds. These options prioritise safety over higher returns.
On the other hand, senior citizens with higher risk tolerance and a desire for better returns can consider equity-oriented mutual funds. Anand K Rathi, co-founder of MIRA Money told ET, “A balanced investment approach involving both debt (like fixed deposits or bonds, which are safer but offer lower returns) and equity (like stocks or mutual funds, which are riskier but offer higher returns) is advisable in such cases.” This balanced approach allows for a combination of stability and growth potential in the investment portfolio.
For conservative investors, a suggested allocation to generate a monthly pension of Rs 1 lakh could be:
S Sridharan, founder and CEO of Wallet Wealth LLP, recommends a conservative investment strategy for senior citizens seeking a monthly pension of Rs 1 lakh. The strategy involves investing in a combination of debt-heavy instruments with some equity exposure to maintain stable returns.
Senior citizens can invest around Rs 25 lakh in various fixed deposits, which currently offer interest rates up to 7.75% in private sector banks and beyond 9.5% in small finance banks for select tenures. By spreading the FD corpus among different banks and investing in various capacities, senior citizens can enjoy a quarterly payout of Rs 46,875, equivalent to a monthly income of Rs 15,625, while ensuring higher safety through the Rs 5 lakh DICGC cover on each FD.
Another option is the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), which offers an interest rate of 8.2% for the June-September quarter. According to Naveen Kukreja, Co-Founder and CEO of Paisabazaar, investing Rs 30 lakh in SCSS will fetch Rs 61,500 every quarter (Rs 20,500 per month). “Keep in mind that senior citizens can claim a tax deduction of up to Rs 50,000 per financial year under Section 80TTB on interest income earned from bank FDs and SCSS investment,” says Kukreja.
RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds, currently offering an interest rate of 8.05% per annum, can also generate regular income. By investing Rs 35 lakh in these bonds, senior citizens would receive Rs 1,40,875 every six months, equivalent to Rs 23,479 per month. However, it is important to note that the interest rate of these bonds is not fixed and is revised twice a year.
For a hassle-free monthly income with minimal risk, senior citizens can invest a lumpsum amount of Rs 30 lakh in long-duration debt funds and start a systematic withdrawal plan. Historically, these funds have delivered returns of 6-7% per annum, allowing senior citizens to earn Rs 16,865 monthly from this debt-oriented SWP for the next 20 years while keeping their initial corpus intact.
Lastly, senior citizens can consider investing another Rs 30 lakh in hybrid mutual funds, such as balanced hybrid mutual funds, which have delivered returns of 9-11% per annum. At a 10% interest rate, senior citizens can receive a regular pension of Rs 23,732 from this SWP for the next 20 years, after which they can get their corpus back.
In summary, by investing a total of Rs 1.45 crore in the suggested instruments, senior citizens can generate a total monthly pension of Rs 1,00,201.
Moderate investors may take more exposure to equities while maintaining a safety net of fixed-income investments. A possible allocation could be:
For an investor with a moderate risk tolerance, a balanced portfolio consisting of both equities and fixed-income investments can be a suitable approach, according to Sridharan.
The investor can allocate approximately Rs 10 lakh to fixed deposits, which would yield a return of 7.5% per annum, translating to a quarterly income of Rs 18,750 or a monthly income of Rs 6,250. Additionally, investing Rs 30 lakh in the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme would provide a monthly pension of Rs 20,500. Furthermore, investing Rs 35 lakh in the RBI Floating Rate Saving Bond would generate a monthly income of Rs 23,479.
Another Rs 35 lakh could be invested in balanced hybrid mutual funds to initiate a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP). Assuming a 10% annual return, this investment could provide a monthly income of Rs 23,732 for the next 20 years while preserving the initial corpus.
If the investor has a higher risk tolerance, they could consider setting up another SWP of Rs 30 lakh in large-cap equity mutual funds. With an assumed 12% annual return, this investment could generate a monthly income of Rs 28,198 for the next 20 years, with the initial corpus being returned after the 20-year period.
In summary, with a total investment amount of Rs 1.35 crore, the investor could receive a combined monthly pension of Rs 1,02,159.
Aggressive investors may have significant equity exposure for higher long-term returns while keeping some funds in safer investments. A suggested allocation could be:
An investor with a higher risk tolerance may allocate a significant portion of their portfolio to equities, aiming for superior returns over the long term while maintaining a portion of their funds in more conservative investments. The senior citizen can allocate Rs 10 lakh to senior citizen fixed deposits, which provide a 7.5% post-tax return, resulting in a monthly income of Rs 6,250.
Additionally, they can invest Rs 30 lakh in the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme, yielding a monthly pension of Rs 20,500 (Rs 61,500 per quarter).
Another option is to invest Rs 30 lakh in equity-oriented hybrid mutual funds and initiate a systematic withdrawal plan (SWP). Assuming an annual return of 10%, this investment can generate a monthly pension of Rs 23,732 for the next 20 years, while preserving the initial corpus.
Furthermore, the senior citizen can allocate Rs 55 lakh to aggressive hybrid funds, large-cap mutual funds, or flexi-cap mutual funds, which have historically delivered returns ranging from 10% to 14%. By starting an SWP, they can receive a regular pension. Assuming a 12% annual return, this investment can provide a monthly income of Rs 51,696 for the next 20 years.
In summary, with a total investment amount of Rs 1.25 crore, the senior citizen can generate a combined monthly pension of Rs 1,02,178 by strategically allocating their funds across various investment options.
What senior citizens should keep in mind?
When investing in regular pensions, senior citizens should keep in mind the LSR rule: liquidity, safety + stability, and returns. Liquidity allows flexibility to withdraw money when needed, while stability ensures that the income lasts a lifetime. Safety can be achieved through diversification across asset classes, and returns should be considered post-tax and inflation-adjusted. Proper nomination and succession planning are also crucial.

How a top Ludhiana industrialist lost Rs 1 crore to call claiming to be from IGI airport official

A Ludhiana-based industrialist has fallen victim to a cyber scam, losing Rs 1 crore. The accused impersonated officials from the Delhi Police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. They sent forged documents, including arrest warrants, court orders freezing the victim’s bank account, and a fabricated CBI letter detailing a non-existent case.

What exactly happened

The victim is Rajneesh Ahuja, 78 from Sarabha Nagar said that he received a call on September 19 from an unknown number and the caller introduced himself as Abhishek Bansal. Bansal claimed to be a Delhi airport official investigating a case involving a parcel sent to Malaysia. He accused Ahuja of sending a parcel containing 16 passports and 58 debit cards to a person named Wangzhang in Malaysia through Global International Courier Company. Ahuja denied these allegations, stating that he had never sent a parcel to Malaysia.
Bansal then suggested that Ahuja’s identity might have been misused to send the parcel. He also informed Ahuja that he would be transferring the case to the Delhi police and that Ahuja could expect a call from a Delhi police official soon.
The victim recounted that at 9:08 AM, he received a call from another number, and the caller identified himself as Sunil Kumar from the Delhi police. The caller informed him that the police had arrested a man named Sanjay Singh, a retired bank officer, who allegedly lured young boys with promises of sending them abroad but would instead hold them captive. Sanjay would then extort money from their families for their release. The caller claimed that Sanjay Singh had collected a total of Rs 38 crores through extortion, which was deposited in Ahuja’s bank account.
The caller further alleged that Sanjay had confessed to paying Ahuja a 10 percent commission for facilitating these transactions. Ahuja denied the accusations, stating that he did not know any Sanjay Kumar. The caller reiterated that Ahuja’s ID proofs might have been misused to open a bank account in his name for extortion purposes. The supposed Delhi cop then urged Rajneesh Ahuja to cooperate with the police investigation, assuring him that he would be declared innocent after the inquiry.
The fraudsters sent forged documents, including a fake arrest warrant in the complainant’s name, a fake court order freezing Rajneesh Ahuja’s bank accounts, and a fabricated CBI document bearing a fake stamp. Believing these documents to be genuine, the victim became frightened.
The accused threatened Ahuja, demanding a security deposit of Rs 86 lakh to avoid arrest. They assured Ahuja that the money would be returned within three hours once the claims were verified. The victim was also instructed not to turn off their mobile phone. Ahuja made the payment into the bank account provided by the accused. However, minutes later, the accused called again, demanding an additional Rs 15 lakh, which Ahuja transferred to the given account.
By 6 PM, Ahuja received a WhatsApp call from another number. The caller, identifying themselves as Anil Kumar from the CBI, informed Ahuja that the investigation had cleared them of any wrongdoing. They promised to have the arrest warrants canceled and Ahuja’s name removed from the FIR. Additionally, the caller assured that the victim’s money would be returned to their bank account by 12 noon on September 20.
Despite these promises, Ahuja neither received their money nor could reach any of the callers. After realising that he had been scammed, Ahuja filed a complaint at Cyber Crime police station.

9 car-free cities around the world in 2024; check out the list | World News

Yesterday, the world celebrated International Car-Free Day, encouraging people globally to forgo cars for a day. By 2024, the number of cars is projected to reach 1.475 billion—equating to one car for every 5.5 people, or 182 cars per 1,000 individuals. While this figure might seem large, the environmental impact is significant: a typical passenger vehicle emits around 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
When multiplied by 1.475 billion cars, the consequences become alarming. Car-free cities aim to reduce traffic congestion, lower pollution levels, and enhance overall quality of life. This movement promotes healthier transportation alternatives, such as cycling, walking, and public transit. Discover the various countries that have embraced this change.

What is car-free city day?

Car-Free Day is an annual event celebrated in many cities around the world to promote sustainable transportation and raise awareness about the environmental impacts of car use. On this day, local authorities often encourage residents to give up their cars for various modes of transport, such as walking, cycling, and public transportation.
The initiative aims to reduce air pollution, traffic congestion, and noise, while also promoting healthier lifestyles and community engagement. Car-Free Day typically features activities like street fairs, cycling events, and educational programs to inspire long-term changes in transportation habits. It’s part of a broader movement to create more livable and sustainable urban environments.

World’s stunning car-free cities in 2024

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Venice attracts around 20 million tourists each year, all while remaining vehicle-free. In fact, locals have even considered banning rolling suitcases to maintain their peaceful, wheel-free environment.

While mules may be slow, they provide a unique way to explore the island. Boats are the preferred mode of transportation to reach the more remote beaches.\

Known as the Dutch Venice, visitors can traverse the area by bike, boat, or foot over the many footbridges crossing its serene canals. Yelapa, Mexico

Yelapa, a charming cove located in the Bay of Banderas, is completely car-free. Although a road leads to the outskirts, travel to and from the village is primarily by boat. In the 1960s and 70s, Yelapa became a haven for hippies, and today its laid-back vibe continues to attract visitors seeking a peaceful escape. Eric Bischoff Calls Rhea Ripley the ‘Queen of Being Different’ in WWE | WWE News

WWE talent Rhea Ripley‘s remarkable ascent to fame and career were recently discussed by former WCW president Eric Bischoff. Renowned for his perceptive comments on wrestling, Bischoff emphasized how Ripley has made a name for herself in the business and is still having a big influence.
During the late 2010s, the Four Horsewomen — Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Bayley, and Sasha Banks (now known as Mercedes Mone in AEW) — were considered the cornerstone of WWE’s women’s division. These four superstars dominated the scene, with the company relying heavily on them to carry the top championships. However, since 2020, a fresh wave of talent has emerged, many of whom honed their skills in WWE NXT. Among this new generation, Rhea Ripley has undoubtedly risen to become one of the most prominent female wrestlers in the business today.

Liv Morgan vs. Rhea Ripley – Women’s World Championship Match: SummerSlam 2024 highlights

On his “83 Weeks” podcast, Bischoff praised Ripley’s unique qualities and suggested that she has only begun to tap into her full potential. He said, “I think Rhea — I’m just so excited about her because I think she’s still on an upwards trajectory. I don’t think she’s peaked at all. I think she’s still got a lot of room to grow, and I’m excited for it. She’s very, very unique. You talk about ‘different than, better than, less than’ — she’s the queen of ‘different than,’ and she’s made it work. She’s so unique. Another thing I really like about her is that she’s not overexposed. She uses social media, but not to the point where you think, ‘Oh, another Rhea Ripley post.’ She’s judicious in the way she uses social media, and it really works for her.”
Ripley is set to challenge Liv Morgan for the WWE Women’s World Championship at the upcoming Bad Blood event. If she emerges victorious, it will mark her third world title since her main roster debut in 2021, further solidifying her status as a top-tier competitor.

Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan, Damian Priest vs. Finn Balor Confirmed for WWE Bad Blood

Finn Bálor blames Rhea Ripley for Judgment Day implosion: Raw highlights, Sept. 16, 2024

The rivalry between Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley has officially escalated to Bad Blood. During Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, it was revealed that Morgan will defend her title against Ripley at the October 5 premium live event. This will be a rematch of their SummerSlam championship encounter last month, where Dominik Mysterio turned on Ripley. Since capturing the title in May, Morgan has only defended it twice. Later in the show, Finn Balor, a member of Judgment Day, issued a challenge to Damian Priest for a match at the same event, which Priest accepted. Ripley and Priest had previously defeated Morgan and Mysterio at WWE Bash in Berlin.
Following Priest’s acceptance of the challenge, the rest of The Judgment Day stormed the ring to attack their former member. Ripley, limping down the ramp with a crutch due to a recent (kayfabe) injury, tried to join the chaos. However, before she could reach the ring, Morgan sprinted towards her. Anticipating the attack, Ripley countered by jabbing the crutch into Morgan’s midsection. Mysterio attempted to intervene but was met with a slap to the face and a strike from the crutch. The distraction gave Morgan the chance to target Ripley’s injured leg. Ripley managed to crawl into the ring, but Morgan followed her and began assaulting her with the crutch. As The Judgment Day continued their beatdown of both Ripley and Priest, Jey Uso rushed in to make the save. Last week, Uso had teamed up with Priest to face Balor and his World Tag Team Champion partner, JD McDonagh. Shortly after the in-ring attack, it was announced that Ripley had been transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation.
