60 years of Indo-French collaboration in space
This year, 2024, marks the 60th year of India-France space collaboration. France has been a long-standing partner having shared several critical technologies in the early years of the Indian space programme. Today, India and the partnership have both matured. DRI seizes Rs 110crore worth controlled substance from Chennai port, arrests two | Chennai News
CHENNAI: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths have seized 110 kg of controlled substance pseudoephedrine — worth Rs 110 crore — from Chennai port and arrested two shipping agents for their role in the bid to smuggle it abroad.
The drug had been hidden inside quartz powder bags in a container and destined for Australia, said DRI sources.
Based on information that synthetic drugs were being smuggled abroad, the sleuths rushed to Chennai port on Wednesday and searched a container.
They seized 110 bags which had been declared as quartz powder. However, each bag had another package inside. “Chemical analysis confirmed that the white powdery substance is pseudoephedrine which is in huge demand in Australia to produce methamphetamine and ecstasy pills,” said DRI sources.
Shipping agents Abudahir and Ahmed Basha were secured. Investigations revealed that they had already sent similar consignments at least four times to Australia.
“They are tight-lipped about where they source the substance from and at whose behest they have been acting. They will be taken into custody for further investigation,” said DRI officials. The duo were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.
This is the second major seizure of drugs by the DRI in 30 days. In August, DRI seized 10.13 kg of methamphetamine worth Rs 50.65 crore and arrested six people.
Earlier this year, the NCB arrested TN-based businessman Jaffer Sadiq for smuggling pseudoephedrine to Australia and New Zealand.

The committee tasked with investigating the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji statue, which happened in August, has submitted a 16-page report to the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government, concluding that rust and a weak frame were the key reasons contributing to the statue’s downfall.
According to the report, the structural integrity of the statue, which stands 33 feet tall, was insufficient to support its weight. Issues such as internal corrosion and defects in the welding were also identified as the main factors in the incident.
The statue, a tribute to the founder of the 17th-century Maratha empire, was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg district on December 4 (Navy Day) last year, but it fell on August 26 during strong winds.
Following the incident, sculptor Jaydeep Apte was arrested. Opposition parties have also slammed the Mahayuti government, alleging that the decision to erect the statue in Sindhudurg was made hastily, which resulted in poor quality of work.

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh recently joined Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist on their renowned podcast, Club Prairie Fire. During the show, the legendary all-rounder shared various stories and experiences with the two cricketing icons, providing insights into his career and personal life.
Yuvraj faced a tough situation when asked to choose between playing, selling, or benching Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni.
Earlier, Vaughan expressed his opinion that he would trade Virat due to his lack of success in leading a team to an IPL title.
He selected Dhoni as his preferred choice for both a player and captain in the starting lineup. However, Vaughan stated that he would not include Rohit in the playing XI and instead have him on the bench.
“As a player, I would go for Rohit Sharma if it’s T20 cricket. He is an outstanding captain and someone who can change the game with his batting for sure, he will be my first choice,” Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj, when asked to choose between benching either Dhoni or Kohli responded with a witty comment. He acknowledged that selecting one over the other could lead to sensational news stories. In order to avoid any controversy, Yuvraj cleverly opted to bench himself instead.
“I would bench myself as naming one between Virat and Dhoni would be in the headlines. I don’t want that to happen,” he added.
Yuvraj also revealed what England’s Andrew Flintoff had said to him during their verbal spat in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
He recalled the moment when Flintoff provoked him after he had smacked a couple of boundaries in his over.
“Freddie bowled two good balls, he bowled a length ball, which went for a boundary, and a good yorker, which I was hit over the point. When I was walking after taking a single, he said, “F… shit shots,” Yuvraj said.
Flintoff didn’t hold back and continued to provoke Yuvraj, which led to an altercation between the two, forcing the umpire to step in.
“He repeated that on my face. I walked towards him; he kind of spat on me. I showed him my bat, saying that you know where it’s going to go. It went worse after that. Then the umpire came in,” Yuvraj added.

ED takes serious action against Elvish Yadav and Fazilpuria in money laundering case; seizes properties |
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has linked the assets of controversial YouTuber Elvish Yadav and musician Fazilpuria as part of a major crackdown. The properties are situated in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Yadav and Fazilpuria were previously questioned by the ED, and their comments are already recorded. Elvish Yadav was previously detained by Noida police for illegally trading snake venom.The ED later filed a complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Previously, the Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner was summoned to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) many times in connection with a money laundering case purportedly related to the rave party event. According to recent reports, Yadav was once again questioned by ED officers at the Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) headquarters. The extensive interview lasted several hours, and a video of him exiting the Lucknow ED office was also made public.
According to sources, officers at the ED zonal office in Lucknow grilled Elvish Yadav for nearly eight hours. The Enforcement Directorate last called the YouTuber in July 2024, alleging that he was involved in a money laundering probe.
According to media sources, during a recent interview in Lucknow, the Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner was asked about his contacts, houses, bank accounts, and other valuables. There are also accusations that during the interview, investigators grabbed his phone to examine photographs, videos, and chat conversations.
The YouTuber is currently facing accusations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for allegedly generating criminal proceeds and utilising illicit cash to conduct rave or recreational events. Elvish was arrested in March 2024, but five days later, a local court granted him bail.
Military boots will enter enemy territory’: IDF chief to Hezbollah
TEL AVIV: Israel Defense Force (IDF) Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has warned Hezbollah that a ground offensive is imminent, stating that Israeli soldiers’ “military boots will enter enemy territory,” Times of Israel reported.
Halevi’s remarks came after Hezbollah fired a missile at central Israel on early Wednesday and Israel responded with airstrikes, which have killed 569 people and wounded 1,835 others, Al Jazeera reported.
During a drill simulating the invasion, Halevi addressed soldiers of the 7th Armored Brigade, as per Times of Israel.
“You can hear the planes above, we are attacking all day. Both to prepare the area for the possibility of your entry [into Lebanon], and also to continue causing blows to Hezbollah,” Halevi said.
“Hezbollah today expanded its [range] of fire. Later today, it will receive a very strong response,” he vows, after the terror group fired a missile at central Israel this morning.
“Today we will continue, we do not stop, we continue to attack and continue to strike them everywhere. The goal is a very clear goal, to return the [displaced] residents of the north safely,” Halevi continues.
“To do this, we are preparing the [ground] maneuver,” he says to the soldiers.
Higlighting his strategy of invasion, Halevi said,”Your military boots will enter enemy territory, enter villages that Hezbollah has prepared as large military outposts, with underground infrastructure, staging points, and launchpads into our territory [from which Hezbollah intends] to carry out attacks on Israeli civilians.
“Your entry into those areas with force, your encounter with Hezbollah operatives, will show them what it means to face a professional, highly skilled, and battle-experienced force,” he goes on. “You are coming in much stronger and far more experienced than they are. You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure. These are the things that will enable us to safely return the residents of the north afterward.”
Though it was shot down, Hezbollah confirmed it launched a Qadr 1 ballistic missile targeting the headquarters of Israel’s intelligence service Mossad in Tel Aviv. It is believed to be the first ballistic missile to be launched by Hezbollah toward Israel, CNN reported
In response Israel responded with airstrikes. In Gaza, the Health Ministry has said at least 50 Palestinians were killed and dozens of others were wounded in the latest 24-hour reporting period in various Israeli attacks on the besieged enclave.
Meanwhile, Israeli official has told CNN that talks over a potential temporary ceasefire with Hezbollah are a main motivator for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
The source said it was notable that Netanyahu, who is currently flying to New York, has not denied reports that the US is pushing for a 21-day ceasefire.
The source added that the main reason for Netanyahu’s trip is these diplomatic talks, and the message in Israel’s briefings yesterday was that “Israel favors a diplomatic solution.”
