These Small Mouse-like Creature’s Males Mate Themselves To Death

This strange behaviour is observed during their breeding period.

The male creatures mate continuously for about 14 hours and die as a result of stress and exhaustion.

Antechinus are little marsupials found in various parts of Australia. These small mouse-like creatures eat insects, spiders, centipedes and sometimes frogs and small reptiles. They are known for their tendency to consume dead members of their own species. This strange behaviour is observed during their breeding period, which lasts from one to three weeks. In the unusual reproductive strategy called semelparity or suicidal reproduction, the male antechinuses die after this breeding period. The male creatures mate continuously for about 14 hours and die as a result of stress and exhaustion. The carcasses of male antechinus are eaten by other antechinuses, including females.

During the breeding season, the bodies of male antechinus produce large amounts of testosterone and the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of testosterone prevent the body from regulating cortisol levels. Very rarely some male antechinus survive death. Diana Fisher, a mammal ecologist at the University of Queensland in Australia, also detailed the statement released in 2013 about their unique breeding behaviour.

“Males stop making sperm before the mating season and their testes disintegrate, so they are not even using energy during the mating period. But they can never reproduce again even if they do live,” Diana said, as reported by Live Science.

Andrew Baker, an ecologist at the Queensland University of Technology, said in a statement in 2024, “Each species may benefit from eating the dead males of the other.”

According to a research report published in the journal Australian Mammalogy, this behaviour of eating the corpses of members of their own species (cannibalistic behaviour) is common among some dasyurids, a family of marsupials. This characteristic of antechinus benefits both males and females. With the males gone, female antechinus can focus on raising young without competition. The energy obtained by feeding on the carcasses of male antechinus is used to fuel the survival of the next generation.

Females go through a 25-35-day gestation period, after which the underdeveloped young move to a pouch on their mother’s abdomen to grow for 50 days. When the young acquire independence at about three months, the cycle begins again, with antechinuses achieving sexual maturity at roughly eight months.

VIJAYAWADA: As the world observes World Alzheimer’s Day, attention in Andhra Pradesh is drawn to the alarming increase in dementia cases within the state. According to Vivek Srivastav, CEO of HCAH Gachibowli, 7.7% of individuals aged 60 and above in Andhra Pradesh are currently affected by dementia, surpassing the national average of 7.4%.
The rising trend is concerning, with projections indicating that by 2036, approximately 8 lakh individuals in Andhra Pradesh will develop dementia. This significant increase underscores the urgent need for specialised rehabilitation centres and innovative care models tailored to meet the specific needs of dementia patients.
“Dementia cases are rising each year, and proper care and monitoring are essential to identify the issue in its early stages,” Srivastav emphasised. He further explained that the goal of their healthcare approach is to transform the patient experience by providing professional care in environments where individuals feel most at ease. By prioritising the cultural and emotional needs of patients, the initiative aims not only to enhance physical well-being but also to adopt a holistic approach that supports the emotional aspects of life.
World Alzheimer’s Day, celebrated on September 21, serves as a global platform to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This year’s observance calls for increased attention to the critical issue of dementia care, advocating for community support and improved healthcare services for affected individuals.
As Andhra Pradesh faces this growing health challenge, the need for effective strategies and resources to support those living with dementia has never been more pressing.

Bureau of Immigration, Chennai police crack down on illegal recruitment agents | Chennai News

Bureau of Immigration, Chennai police crack down on illegal recruitment agents

CHENNAI: In a first, the Bureau of Immigration and the Chennai city police have jointly cracked down on illegal recruitment agents who lured job seekers with fake overseas offers. In an operation carried out on Wednesday, 15 special teams comprising 80 officers and personnel carried out searches in more than 10 places in the city and registered nine cases.
Mobile phones and laptops used by agents to solicit job seekers had been seized during the operation, said the Protector of Emigrants (PoE).”The illegal agents targeted individuals seeking employment in Eastern European countries and Canada. These agents charged them exorbitant fees — often amounting to several lakhs of rupees — on the pretext of visa processing and work permits,” said the PoE.
The joint operation was mooted after many candidates reported that they had been defrauded in different ways.
The PoE has advised overseas job seekers to engage only with licensed recruiting agents. It clarified that a valid licence from the external affairs ministry is required for an individual or agency to recruit Indian citizens for overseas employment.
“Engaging in such recruitment without a licence is a violation of the Emigration Act, 1983. Strict legal actions will be pursued against those involved. Aspiring overseas recruiting agents are encouraged to contact the PoE office in Chennai to apply for the necessary licence,” said the PoE.
Licensed agents are required to maintain a bank guarantee with govt, and their operations are closely monitored and regulated by PoE offices. These agents undergo stringent inspections and document verification before obtaining their licences, making them a reliable choice for overseas job placements.

Google has implemented new restrictions for these users

Google has implemented new restrictions on Russian users, including limiting the creation of new accounts. According to Reuters, the Russian digital ministry confirmed on Thursday that Google has imposed these restrictions, marking the latest development in the ongoing tension between the company and the Russian government.
Reuters reports that this action follows Google’s decision in August to deactivate AdSense accounts in Russia, citing an inability to make payments to Russia-based users of its advertising service. The company had previously stopped serving ads to Russian users in March 2022, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.
The restrictions extend beyond account creation. As reported by Reuters, Russian telecom operators have noted a significant reduction in the number of SMS messages sent by Google to Russian users, potentially affecting two-factor authentication processes.
In response, the Russian digital ministry has advised users to create backup copies of their data and consider switching to alternative authentication methods or domestic platforms.
Google has faced increasing pressure from Russian authorities in recent years, particularly for not removing content deemed illegal by Moscow and for blocking YouTube channels of Russian media and public figures since the Ukraine conflict began. Reuters states that the company has blocked over 1,000 YouTube channels and more than 5.5 million videos related to the war.
Adding to the tensions, Russian lawmakers have accused Google of failing to upgrade its equipment in the country, leading to slower speeds on YouTube. However, both Google and technology experts dispute these claims, according to Reuters.

‘Arvind Kejriwal have crossed all limits of shamelessness’: Swati Maliwal slams AAP chief for calling her assault case against Bibhav ‘false’ | India News

'Arvind Kejriwal have crossed all limits of shamelessness': Swati Maliwal slams AAP chief for calling her assault case against Bibhav 'false'
Swati Maliwal and Arvind Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Wednesday slammed party chief Arvind Kejriwal for calling her assault case against Bibhav Kumar “false” and asked that if the party can’t stand for his female MP, how will he take a stand for the women of Delhi?
Maliwal also said that the former chief minister hired best lawyers to take him out of the case, proving that if he again abuse or beat someone then they will save him.
“You have crossed all limits of shamelessness Arvind Kejriwal Sir, the goon who attacked me in your presence at your residence, while he was in jail, you hired the country’s most expensive army of lawyers to save him, got PC after PC done against me. Today, when he is out on bail, he is being called the biggest leader of the party and they are saying that he has been put in jail in a fake case”, she said in a post on X.
Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar was granted bail in Swati Maliwal assault case on September 2.

“Even the Supreme Court said that who keeps such goons in their residence. If these statements of theirs do not boost the spirits of goons like Bibhav, then what else will? The message is clear – even if you fight again, we will save you. Not every person who is a partner in all your wrongdoings is a great leader. You have a hobby of keeping people who say “Wah Sir, Wah Sir” around you, that is why the world has started looking blurry. Every other day you compare yourself with Maryada Purushottam Ram! So much arrogance is not good. If someone cannot take a stand for his party’s female MP, how will he take a stand for the women of Delhi?,” she said.
This came after Kejriwal, while addressing the Delhi Assembly, he said that his party’s several leaders were sent in jail in false case including Bibhav Kumar.

Weekend exercise as effective in lowering disease risk as that done over entire week, study finds

Weekend exercise as effective in lowering disease risk as that done over entire week, study finds

NEW DELHI: People cramming their entire week’s exercise in one or two days or over the weekend, could be at a lower risk of developing over 200 diseases, with similar effects to those who exercise throughout the week, a study has found. ‘Weekend warriors‘ are individuals who engage in moderate or vigourous physical activity over the weekend and yet meet the World Health Organization’s recommendations of 150 minutes of exercise per week for overall health.
However, researchers said it is not clear if ‘weekend warriors’ experience more health benefits compared to those distributing their exercise in durations of 20-30 minutes on most days of the week.
“We show the potential benefits of weekend warrior activity for risk not only of cardiovascular diseases, as we’ve shown in the past, but also future diseases spanning the whole spectrum, ranging from conditions like chronic kidney disease to mood disorders and beyond,” said Shaan Khurshid, a faculty member at Massachusetts General Hospital, US and a senior author on the study.
In a study, published in July in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), the team had found that the weekend warrior style of exercise was associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke compared to exercise performed evenly over a week.
The research, published in the journal Circulation, analysed data from nearly 90,000 individuals in the UK Biobank dataset.
Participants wore wrist accelerometers for a week between June 2013 and December 2015, which recorded their total physical activity, including duration and intensity. They were classified under ‘weekend warrior’, ‘regular’, or ‘inactive’.
The study examined links between physical activity patterns and incidence of 678 conditions across 16 types of diseases, including mental health, digestive and neurological ones.
Both weekend warriors and regulars were found to have significantly lower risks of developing over 200 medical conditions, particularly cardiometabolic ones like hypertension and obesity, compared to those inactive.
Further, the disease risk reduction was similar for both weekend warriors and regulars, with no significant differences in risk across any condition between the two groups, the researchers said.
“Achievement of measured physical activity volumes consistent with guideline recommendations is associated with lower risk for (over) 200 diseases, with prominent effects on cardiometabolic conditions,” the authors said.
“Associations appear similar whether physical activity follows a weekend warrior pattern or is spread more evenly throughout the week,” they added.
The findings were consistent across many different definitions of weekend warrior activity, as well as other thresholds used to categorise people as active, said Khurshid.

Is Your Partner A Bad Listener? 4 Ways To Deal With It

A partner who is a bad listener will not make you feel heard.

A partner who is a bad listener will not make you feel heard.

A good partner knows how to keep the right balance between listening and communicating.

The two most important things that act as pillars of a relationship are effective communication and active listening. A good partner knows how to keep the right balance between these two valuable aspects. Imagine a partner who is a great communicator, but doesn’t pay attention when you talk. Sounds frustrating, right? This relationship would be a complete disaster as your partner would not be in sync with your feelings. He will not make you feel heard. Here are some tips to deal with your partner, if they are a bad listener.

Active listening

The best way to get the behaviour you want is to act like it yourself. Encourage the active listening you want, don’t just give 100% for the show. When your partner is communicating with you, give them your full attention, show them they’ve caught your interest with small gestures like firm eye contact and head nods, and turn off any nearby distractions, be it your cell phone, the TV, or anything else.

Set clear communication goals

Let them know how you want communication to go between the two of you. Determine what effective and ideal communication looks like for each of you, understand each other’s preferred way of communicating, and then find common ground to create a perfect balance between what you need during interactions and what the other needs.

Choose the right place and time to talk

The timing and situation you are in can have a significant impact on how your partner perceives you. It is very important that you do not have delicate and detailed conversations in already stressful situations or when your partner is busy or distracted with something. A calm, upbeat and light-hearted environment can be beneficial for an important conversation. Find a quiet and peaceful time when both of you are in a good mood and try to start the conversation. This will make it clear that you respect and value the other person’s space, while also taking a step forward by letting them know what you need.

Consider professional support

Sometimes seeking professional help is not only necessary but can also prove to be extremely beneficial and do wonders for your relationship. If the situation in the relationship is not improving despite consistent efforts and communication, a third party’s perspective can help improve it by understanding both sides of the story and offering tailored strategies and methods to encourage discussion and help both parties understand each other’s point of view in the required setting.
