Brazil’s drought drives coffee and sugar prices to record highs amid global supply concerns

Brazil's drought drives coffee and sugar prices to record highs amid global supply concerns

NEW DELHI: Brazil, the world’s leading producer of coffee and sugar, continues to face one of the most severe droughts in its history. The dry conditions have persisted, and weather forecasts indicate no immediate relief, causing global prices for both commodities to reach new heights on Thursday as investors remain focused on the situation.
The drought has led to the outbreak of farmland fires in some sugar-producing areas, while the arabica crop, currently in its critical flowering stage, has been hit even harder.Analysts from LSEG suggest that although some weather models predict the arrival of rain in Brazil, it is unlikely to materialize until mid-to-late October, if at all, AFP reported.
They state, “Overall, the forecast for Brazil looks largely negative heading into October, with a hint of relief towards the end of the month.”
Coffee industry experts and dealers have noted that consistent rainfall could still revive the trees in Brazil, but the overall crop situation remains precarious. The scarcity has driven benchmark arabica futures on the ICE exchange to a 13-year high of $2.7380 (Rs 229.11) per lb, with prices trading up 0.9% at $2.7150 (Rs 227.14) by 11:23 GMT (4:53 pm IST). Similarly, raw sugar futures reached a 7-month peak of 23.71 cents per lb and were later trading up 1% at 23.66 cents.
In Vietnam, the world’s top robusta coffee producer, local prices have decreased this week in anticipation of the new harvest, with traders reporting favorable weather conditions. An increase in output from Vietnam could potentially alleviate some of the upward pressure on arabica prices, as the two grades are somewhat interchangeable. However, Vietnam experienced adverse weather earlier this year, and it is widely anticipated that the upcoming crop will reflect this, reported AFP.
As of 1123 GMT, robusta coffee futures, which reached their highest level in nearly 50 years last week, were trading up 1.4% at $5,223 a metric ton, while white sugar futures were up 0.6% at $600.40 a ton. In other soft commodities, December New York cocoa rose 3.7% to $8,250 a ton, and March London cocoa rose 1.7% to 4,609 pounds per ton.

Wrestlers’ sexual harassment: HC asks Delhi Police to reply to Brij Bhushan’s plea for quashing FIR | India News

Wrestlers' sexual harassment: HC asks Delhi Police to reply to Brij Bhushan's plea for quashing FIR

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Thursday sought the city police’s response to a petition by former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Singh, seeking quashing of the FIR and charges framed against him in a sexual harassment case lodged by several women wrestlers. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri also issued a notice on the plea to the complainant grapplers and listed the matter for further hearing on January 13.
“Let status report/reply be filed,” the judge said.
Singh, who is also a former MP of the BJP, was last year accused of sexual assault by several female wrestlers who sat on a protest for weeks demanding a probe against him.
The Delhi Police filed an FIR against him after the intervention of the Supreme Court in May 2023.
After a trial court framed charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women against the former lawmaker on May 21, Singh approached the high court last month claiming that he has been falsely implicated and no offence as alleged by the prosecution has been committed by him.
On August 29, the high court asked him to file all his contentions in the matter.
Singh, in his plea, has contended that the investigation was done in a biased manner as only the version of the victims, who were interested in taking revenge on him, was considered. He said the charge sheet was filed before the trial court without taking care of the falsehood of allegation.
He is represented by advocate Rajiv Mohan.
he petition has stated that the ongoing proceedings in the trial court pursuant to the FIR are against the natural principles of law and justice as each alleged incident is a “standalone offence” and does not “cumulatively form a continuous sequence of events or a part of a single transaction”.
It also said that some allegations even refer to incidents that took place beyond the jurisdiction of India.
Earlier, police submitted in the high court that the petition was not maintainable.
The trial court has also framed the charge of criminal intimidation against co-accused and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar in the case. He has challenged the charges and the FIR in this petition.

Released in 2012, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur is now a cult classic.

Anurag Kashyap revealed that he lived in the smallest and cheapest rooms while he was shooting Gangs Of Wasseypur. He said that some actors wanted bigger rooms.

Anurag Kashyap has always voiced his concern against the tantrums and the demands thrown by celebrities on movie sets. In a recent media interaction, the filmmaker revealed that he decided to opt for a smaller room while working on Gangs Of Wasseypur because some celebrities wanted bigger rooms.

Speaking at the Marrakech Film Festival, Anurag Kashyap revealed that he stayed in the smallest and cheapest room along with the camera man. The filmmaker revealed that he took this decision because some actors wanted a bigger room during the filming of Gangs Of Wasseypur. He mentioned that he opted for a smaller room so that others could get embarrassed and not ask for much. He said, “In Gangs of Wasseypur there was one known actor and other unknown actors. Some people said they wanted a bigger hotel room, so I said okay fine, and stayed in the smallest and the cheapest room. So, suddenly that equalized everything and people were embarrassed to ask for more things because my cameramen and I were living in the cheapest rooms, which literally was big enough to only have a bed. So, people stopped asking for more.”

Directed by Kashyap, Gangs Of Wasseypur was a two-part gangster drama. The movie starred Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddique, Richa Chadha, and Tigmanshu Dhulia among others. In the same conversation, the director mentioned that they faced a similar problem when it came to who would get their names first on the credit list. He continued, “Because the film had a big cast, everyone was fighting about whose name would come on top. I put my name at the bottom at the end of the film and said you guys decide. When I did that, everyone said okay, put our names at the end. That’s my way of problem-solving– I want to just make the film.”

Gangs Of Wasseypur was released in 2012. The movie has grown to become a cult classic among film enthusiasts. On the work front, Kashyap was last seen in Maharaja where he shared the screen with Vijay Sethupathi.

Vivek Ramaswamy plots his next move, with or without Donald Trump

Vivek Ramaswamy plots his next move, with or without Donald Trump
“I feel like I am pursuing my calling,” Ramaswamy says.

Vivek Ramaswamy wants to be clear, or clear-ish: He says he doesn’t really know if anyone’s eating cats and dogs over in Springfield, Ohio, 45 minutes from his home in Columbus.
But the hyperkinetic-MAGA loyalist is going to head to the town that became a political flash point after the outlandish Internet theory about Haitian migrants there went viral. Never mind that the bizarre claim — amplified by Donald Trump during the presidential debate — is false.
As a divided America slouches toward Election Day, Ramaswamy is the same man the nation remembers: the preeningly ambitious, do-and-say-what-it-takes overachiever hungering for his shot at history.
On this mid-September afternoon, he’s gulping down a bottle of Mountain Valley Spring Water — the same brand, not incidentally, that’s been served at the White House — after a round of tennis and a workout with battle ropes, and barefooting around his mansion. Propped on the mantle in the basement, beneath an American flag, is an image of Trump after his attempted assassination in July. Indian hand drums are nestled on the floor nearby. If he looks and sounds like a guy in a hurry, well, that’s because he is.
Ramaswamy pads down to his basement studio for an interview about his latest book. Then up to his office for a conference call with John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser. Then back down to the basement for another interview. He talks so fast that Ramaswamy said Trump once joked he made his head hurt. Before long, he’s heading downtown to give a talk to the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
At age 39, and with a national profile few might have foreseen, Ramaswamy is on the cusp of — something. It was only nine months ago that he ended his long-shot campaign for the Republican nomination, where he prayed with Evangelicals and rapped to Eminem.
Now, if Trump wins on November 5, Ramaswamy might very well follow the former president back to Washington. There’s talk of a cabinet position, perhaps the Department of Homeland Security. Trump has vowed to deport millions of people living in the US illegally and has said that one the places he’d start would be Springfield. Ramaswamy declines to discuss his potential role in a Trump administration.
And if Kamala Harris wins? Ramaswamy says he would accept the result of “a free and fair election,” even as Trump keeps claiming, with zero evidence, that the last election was “rigged” and this one might be too. “Whoever wins the election, wins the election,” Ramaswamy says. “I would commit to leading the Republican party to move past allegations of stolen elections.”
But Ramaswamy is Ramaswamy: He’s also strongly considering running for governor right here in Ohio. As his SUV heads toward the colonnaded statehouse, the former biotech entrepreneur says he’d transform his home state, synonymous with Rust Belt despair, into the next low-tax Florida or Texas.
“If other states have pulled it off and managed to get a boom of economic growth as a consequence, Ohio can too,” he says.
Another option, Ramaswamy says, would be to fill the Senate seat currently occupied by JD Vance, his former classmate at Yale Law, who Trump chose as his running mate rather than Ramaswamy.
Whether it’s Plan A, B or C, Ramaswamy seems poised to reap dividends for pledging allegiance to Trump. Since bowing out of the presidential race, he’s bought a stake in media company Buzzfeed Inc. and cemented valuable connections in the MAGA-verse. The Trump campaign dispatched him to the “spin room” in Philadelphia to talk up Trump’s performance following the September debate with Vice President Harris. He’s also been stumping for Trump in swing states, helped to galvanize him on crypto currencies and visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he said he helped the former president and his team craft a statement on abortion earlier this year.
Today, Ramaswamy says he counts among his friends Elon Musk, Trump’s richest fan, whom he met last year at the home of venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya. Backers of Ramaswamy’s young investment firm, Strive Asset Management, include Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire who was an early patron of Vance, and Howard Lutnick, the Wall Street financier who happens to be helping to vet potential cabinet members for Trump.
No one goes into politics without some measure of self-regard. But to say Ramaswamy projects assurance would be to understate the matter. He’s ticked the boxes: Harvard, Yale Law, business success and wealth. His first book, “Woke, Inc.” brought him to national attention. So did his role as an early instigator of conservative attacks against environmental, social and governance investing on Wall Street, as well as against diversity, equity and inclusion. Ramaswamy now argues that corporate diversity efforts have only fueled racial animus. Black Americans who get jobs on merit are often viewed as diversity hires, he says.
“There’s an injustice of a different kind,” he says.
Looking back, Ramaswamy says he was “chastened” that the announcement of his presidential run fell flat. But, like Trump, he’s developed a reputation as a political counterpuncher. Nicknamed “V-Dog” in high school because of his bulldog tenacity, he hits back hard when challenged — and keeps on coming. He says personal attacks against him during his run triggered his “gladiatorial instincts.”
Now, just maybe, Ramaswamy has a second shot at power in Washington. None of this seems to surprise him. This, he says, was the plan all along.
“It feels natural for me,” Ramaswamy says. “I feel like I am pursuing my calling.”
Ramaswamy says his ambition and drive probably reflect insecurities that can come with being part of an immigrant family. He peers out the window of his SUV at the quiet streets of downtown Columbus and goes on: “They probably have roots in some sort of deep-seated experiences of inadequacy that make you want to make sure that you’re able to fight your way.”
Ramaswamy brushes off the suggestion that he and Harris, whose late mother is from India and father is from Jamaica, might share something in common in that regard. Among other things, they speak the Indian language Tamil. Ramaswamy’s brusque retort: “But I’m very open about my heritage.” The comment echoes Trump, who’s falsely suggested that Harris “happened to turn Black.”
When Ramaswamy got to Springfield last week, he spoke at a town hall-style event. The place was packed. He said he doesn’t blame migrants nor locals for the uproar (most Haitians in Springfield are in the US legally). Instead, he blamed the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Ramaswamy said in an interview afterward that he didn’t go there to talk about cats and dogs.
This much is sure: Vivek Ramaswamy has a plan — several, in fact. Whichever one plays out, he says he wants to bring about “lasting change” in the US. And by “lasting,” the hyper-ambitious Ramaswamy doesn’t mean for the next four years. He means “over decades or centuries.”
November 5 will determine his next move.

Sri Lanka releases jailed TN fisherman on prisoners’ day

World Record! Sri Lanka sensation Kamindu Mendis becomes first-ever batsman to… | Cricket News

World Record! Sri Lanka sensation Kamindu Mendis becomes first-ever batsman to...
Kamindu Mendis (AP Photo)

NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka sensation Kamindu Mendis has etched his name in the history books, becoming the first-ever batsman to score fifty or more in eight consecutive Test matches.
The stylish left-hander achieved this remarkable feat during Sri Lanka’s second Test match against New Zealand at Galle International Stadium on Thursday.
Coming in at number five, Mendis once again displayed his exceptional batting acumen, notching up his fourth half-century in Test cricket.
The milestone came as Sri Lanka recovered from a shaky start in their first innings. After captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and chose to bowl, Sri Lanka’s early innings suffered a setback with Pathum Nissanka dismissed cheaply.
However, veteran campaigners Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal steadied the innings with a crucial 122-run partnership for the second wicket.

Karunaratne’s unfortunate run out provided New Zealand with a breakthrough, but Chandimal continued his fine form to bring up a century before being dismissed.
It was Kamindu Mendis’ arrival that solidified Sri Lanka’s position. Alongside Angelo Mathews, Mendis guided the team past the 300-mark, scoring a sublime 51* by the end of day one, with Sri Lanka finishing on 306 for three.
Mendis’ incredible consistency has been a defining feature of his game, starting with his fifty against Australia in Galle in 2022, followed by awe-inspiring scores against Bangladesh and England earlier this year.
Kamindu Mendis in last eight Test matches (only 50+ scores):

  • 61 vs AUS in 2022
  • 102 & 164 vs BAN in 2024
  • 92* vs BAN in 2024
  • 113 vs ENG in 2024
  • 74 vs ENG in 2024
  • 64 vs ENG in 2024
  • 114 vs NZ in 2024
  • 51* vs NZ in 2024

His latest half-century against New Zealand not only helped Sri Lanka post a formidable total but also saw him break a world record that stood untouched for years.
Mendis’ remarkable run is a clear sign of his growing stature in world cricket, making him one of Sri Lanka’s most reliable middle-order batsmen.
