WASHINGTON: Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in the US capital on Thursday by a Washington, DC, Court of Appeals, months after he lost his law license in New York over baseless claims he made alleging the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
Giuliani has been a member of the DC bar since 1976. His law license was suspended in 2021 and a District of Columbia attorney ethics committee recommended in July that his license be revoked. He also lost his New York law license in July.
Giuliani, who in the 1980s served as US attorney in Manhattan, was one of the leading proponents of false claims that former President Donald Trump‘s defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 was the result of widespread voter fraud.
He also was accused of making false statements to courts, lawmakers and the public while serving as Trump’s attorney.
Giuliani was among the people indicted with Trump in Georgia for efforts to overturn the election results in that state. He has pleaded not guilty and called the allegations politically motivated.
The former mayor was also charged in Arizona with illegally seeking to claim the state’s 2020 electoral votes for Trump.
Giuliani filed for bankruptcy protection after being ordered to pay $148 million in a defamation lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers he falsely accused of rigging votes.
However, a US judge ended that bankruptcy last month.
