Sleep is vital for a human being because it is the time when your body repairs itself and gets ready for the daily chores. Best sleeping position to get deep sleep is like a personal preference to everybody. However, they play a major role in making or breaking your health. One such bad position that can have a negative impact on your health is sleeping on your stomach.
Sleeping on your stomach is detrimental to your health, posing significant risks to your overall well-being.This position strains your neck and spine, leading to discomfort, pain, and potential long-term damage. Moreover, stomach sleeping can cause back pain, respiratory issues, and exacerbate digestive problems. The pressure on your stomach can also lead to acid reflux, indigestion, and vomiting.

Dr. Joydeep Ghosh, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, said “Sleeping on your stomach increases the risk of food regurgitation and aspiration into the lungs, potentially causing pneumonia. Your nose is compressed on the pillow, obstructing breathing and potentially leading to respiratory complications. Additionally, stomach sleeping can contribute to skin issues like wrinkles and fine lines due to facial pressure.

To mitigate these risks, consider alternative sleeping positions. Sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees or on your right side with a pillow between your knees can support spinal alignment, reduce pressure on your heart and lungs, and promote comfortable breathing.

To further safeguard your health:
– Avoid heavy meals close to bedtime (wait at least 2-3 hours)
– Use a supportive pillow (firm and thin)

– Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
According to Dr. Sanjoy Sen Gupta, Consultant, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, “Sleeping positions do matter for people, especially those who are already having certain cardiovascular diseases like heart failure as it may cause discomfort to the concerned person.
The left-side sleeping positions are least recommended for the patients with poor heart health as compared to the right-side. This is because while sleeping on the left-side, the lungs are compressed, decreasing the overall respiratory efficiency. It is also to be noted that for post-sternotomy (OHS) patients, the cardiac surgeons advise patients not to turn aside at least for 3 months as that is the minimum duration for a sternum bone to heal up.”
