Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stepped up its weather warnings for Goa, issuing a red alert for Sep 24.
Heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places, and very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely with winds gusting to 40-50 kmph at isolated places.
The IMD has attributed this to a cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to impact the state’s weather.The cyclonic activity, extending up to 5.8km above the mean sea level and tilting south-westwards, is expected to give rise to a low pressure area over the west central Bay of Bengal and its surroundings within the next 24 hours.
As a result, after a period of weakened activity, the southwest monsoon has regained strength over Goa, leading to isolated heavy rainfall in some areas on Monday.
Following the red alert for Sep, an orange alert has been issued for Sep 25, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and wind gusts of 30-40 km/h. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Sep 26.
Fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period. Residents are urged to stay informed about the evolving weather situation and take necessary precautions in anticipation of heavy rain and potential disruptions.
As of Sep 23, the state has recorded a seasonal total of 166 inches of rainfall.
