Amit Sial at TOI Dialogues: Shaad Ali's 'Bunty Aur Babli' starring Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji portrayed Kanpur accurately
Actor Amit Sial graced the TOI Dialogues stage as he joined a panel of celebrities like Anupriya Goenka and Zakir Hussain to decode the ‘Growth Story Of KANPUR’. During the discussion, the actor shared his thoughts on the representation and depiction of the city and its people on the big screen.
Reflecting on which Bollywood film accurately depicted the characters and dialect, Sial picked Shaad Ali’s 2005 hit ‘Bunty Aur Babli‘, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. He said, “I saw ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. He (director Shaad Ali) was absolutely right in that.”
He further elaborated, “I think the way he portrayed Kanpur was very good. I mean, the lines in the mother tongue which you can’t show in films or you can narrate if they are misused. I think it was a very good rendition. I thought he portrayed it very well and the people of Kanpur were very also well-characterized.”
‘Bunty Aur Babli’, a crime-comedy, follows Bunty (played by Abhishek Bachchan) and Babli (played by Rani Mukerji) as they dream of escaping their mundane lives and achieving notoriety through a series of outrageous cons. Known for its humorous take on small-town aspirations, the film became a classic.

Sial, a native of Kanpur himself, noted that while some films have accurately depicted the people, he mentioned that certain nuances of the local culture were still missing from the screen. “There are still a lot of dialogues and a lot of flavours of Kanpur which are not on the screen and which the locals talk about. For example, here, no one will give you a straight answer. Everyone has a sarcastic tone to their speech.”
